Zoo Excursions

12Y Zoo Excursion

12Y Personal Development students had a great day out at the Melbourne Zoo on Monday, 5th September. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the animals were out and about basking in the rays.

Students participated in a VCAL Conservation tour where they had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at Melbourne Zoo's Marine Response Unit (MRU) and heard about how the team responds to a variety of wildlife in distress, including those entangled in litter pollution.

Students are currently working on an environmental issue back at school that addresses the impact of litter on our marine creatures and wildlife. Much of the information gained from the excursion can be applied in the classroom as students finalise their slogans and marketing around how we can all do our bit to protect the animals.

Students discovered the tools that Zoos Victoria utilises to engage visitors in their conservation projects which follow the model of Connect-Understand-Act. These tools can now be used by students to promote their own conservation project within their communities.

It was a pleasure taking the students out of the classroom to experience learning in the environment.

Thank you to all members of the class for upholding the school values with pride, for being curious and for asking questions throughout the day.

We would like to thank Nadia and Edna for joining us on the excursion.

11V & 12V - Melbourne Zoo Visit

Students from 11V and 12V organised an enjoyable visit to Melbourne Zoo recently. 11V participated in a guided tour of the Marine Response Unit, looking at rescued seals, and the impact humans have on oceans and waterways. 12V also took a guided tour looking at the orangutan enclosure and the campaign for sustainable palm oil farming that would preserve their natural habitats.

Despite having to deal with dreary weather and disruptions on the train line, the students remained positive and made the most of the opportunity to expand their learning about environmental issues.

“The Zoo trip was fun. We had to try and find information about the Marine Response Unit and go on a tour with one of the staff members.”
