Term 3 Wrap-up! Urban Harvest and Hands on Learning
The Hands On Learning and Urban Harvest students have not been hibernating over winter! They’ve been busy as bees in and around the Applied Learning, Greenbrook Community Garden and Hands on Learning Workshop. Here’s a snapshot of their efforts and achievements:
- Students put their sustainability skills to the test by creating shelving for the Applied Learning Garden Shed using broken and unused classroom tabletops. Students exercised those numeracy skills, measuring, cutting and following designs to bring their prototype to life. Now the shelving is standing proud in the Applied Learning Garden shed! Be sure to check out their handy work in the photos attached.
- The students constructed compost bays made from reclaimed timber. These will be put hard to work once the compost bay is in full swing churning through the food scraps collected from the Food Technology area!
- Ms Malvaso’s art class began decorating the shed with their awesome artwork! Stay tuned for more updates in the final term.
- General garden maintenance in and around the school and community garden – keeping those winter weeds at bay using home-made organic pesticide and keeping the winter beds warm by topping up the gardens with mulch.
- Urban Harvest students ditched the garden shovels on those wet winter days and instead hit the tools with the Lalor Men’s Shed team – where they built wooden toolboxes and window planter boxes for the community garden, primed pots and practiced their tiling skills by grouting artwork for the all abilities art group at the Greenbrook Community House.
- Giving the garden furniture at the Community House a much-needed sand and then students created their own organic linseed oil, giving the furniture a good lick of varnish in time for the springtime garden parties held at the Greenbrook ‘Community Garden!
- The students wrapped up their raised garden bed designs on Sketch-Up and now they’ve begun working on the foundations of the raised garden beds in the Applied Learning Garden. Watch this space, as the garden area takes shape in Term 4!
