NAPLAN Results

Once again this year, all Australian students participated in the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program –Literacy and Numeracy).  This involved students in Year 3 and 5 participating in the testing of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy skills.

One of the major purposes of the Assessment is to give parents and caregivers information about the progress of their children in relation to nationally agreed benchmarks.  These benchmarks represent the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy skills expected of students in Australian schools at these year levels.  The hard copy reports have been sent home this week and will be available on Edumate through the Parent Portal in the coming days.

It is important for all children, parents and educators to appreciate that the NAPLAN represents just one method of testing and assessing.  Whilst Good Shepherd results are collectively, high, it is important to note that, from time to time, student achievement in the NAPLAN does not truly represent a child’s ability and progress.  Some children struggle to cope with the pressure of the experience, even though the assessment loosely represents classroom type tasks, takes place in the classroom and is conducted by the classroom teacher.  These discrepancies tend to be few and both teachers and parents generally are quick to identify questionable results.

The NAPLAN Student Report should be viewed as complementary to our more detailed school assessment and reporting.  Your child’s teacher is happy to discuss results if you need further information or clarification early in Term 4.

Looking forward in seeing you then!

Growing Faith at Home

What is salt used for? You might think of its cleaning agent properties, its use as a preservative… or how it brings out the flavour in food. One of this week’s Caring Conversation ponderings is: Jesus says his followers must have the qualities of salt. What do you think he means?’ The resource offers some creative ideas that around the text ‘Have salt in yourselves and be at peace with one another.’ (Mark 9:50)  I guess one take on this could be ‘How do you flavour the conversations that you are involved in? Check out the resource for more ideas!
