the tent maker

I wonder if you who are reading this have ever had a life-altering experience. Whether it was meeting someone amazing, moving to another country, reading a book that changed your mind about something else; this experience might have moved you to do something different with your life.

So it was with the Apostle Paul. On the road to Damascus, Paul (Saul) was confronted with the dismal reality of his past and given an alternative for the future, one that would be exciting and dangerous, joyful and painful. Jesus appeared to him on the road and Paul knew he had to do something new with his life.

Across his travels through Europe visiting many different people in many different cultures, Paul ran into a married couple named Priscilla and Aquila. What was wonderful about these people was that not only were they deeply involved in their faith, but they shared the same occupation as Paul – tentmakers.

For Paul, tentmaking might have been the thing that kept him grounded. The people that he met would have kept him flying. For Paul, this life that he was called to when he moved to Corinth to be with Priscilla and Aquila, was different than anything he expected, and yet the people… the stories… the amazing difference that Jesus made in his life gave him such joy.

Perhaps you’re at a crossroads in life. Maybe you’re wondering if God is calling you to something new. Maybe there will be people that you encounter during the school holidays who will alter something in your life?

Whatever that might be, enjoy the ride, like Paul.
