The 3/4 Terrible Trash Trail

This term the 3/4's have been focusing on making positive actions to help our environment. This includes understanding different ways we could be polluting the earth and the local community.

In reading we have been reading the text "The Terrible Trash Trail" which has not only improved our environmental vocabulary but also gave us an idea of how we could help the community of Teesdale. This led to a trek to Turtle bend on Friday where the 3/4 students gathered in house groups to collect the most rubbish they could see.

After spending the morning foraging for rubbish, we walked back to school and weighed our findings. We were able to use our knowledge of vertical addition to figure out how much each bag weighed and the total of all the bags. Being a house competition we were eager to find out the winner and the results came in with...Third place came Tolson house collecting 2.7kg of rubbish, only just in second place by 100 grams was Sutherland on 3.4kg and in first place came Barker collected 3.5kg of rubbish.

We were all amazed that we picked up over 8kg of rubbish along a track most of us use everyday! It was great to see so many smiling faces at the end of the day, knowing that their action played a small part in looking out for our environment.

Fancy Finances in 5/6

Written by students in 5/6A

Over the last two weeks, we have been learning about how to manage bank accounts, interest, term deposits and our savings. We have used Banqer to learn about arranged overdraft accounts vs. unarranged overdraft accounts and how they can be useful in an emergency - like when the fridge breaks at home!

We have all been employed (by Miss Armstrong and Mrs Kelley!) and some of our jobs are Librarian, Dishes Monitor, Table Organiser and Police Officer. After earning some income, we have started a term deposit account. We are able to choose a certain amount of time to keep our money locked away. This is so it can earn some interest!

Some of us have started to realise we need to have enough savings to pay for bills. Others have started to go into debt, and now need to apply for a second job!

Mason C - It has been good to learn about bank accounts so we know how to pay bills in real life.

Wilfred - I have liked learning about this topic because I will be ready for the future and know how to make good money choices.

Sheena - It is important we learn about this now so that we know how important these skills are when we are older.

Maddi K-T - We also need to know about this now so that we can understand decisions our parents and family makes.

Steph - It is important to know about income and paying bills. We can't just spend all our money on what we want!

Evie O - I want to keep learning about finances so that it helps us know more about saving and spending our money.
