Olympic Change Maker Award

On Tuesday 4 September both Llerani and I were lucky enough to attend the state Olympic Change Maker forum. The day consisted of meeting six different Olympians and connecting with 140 other like minded students from across the state.  To start off the day we did a few fun 'meet and greet' activities where we were able to interact with students from other schools as well as the Olympians.

After morning tea we were seated and listened to our host Jennifer Screen, an ex-Olympic basketball player interview the following Olympians:

  • Anabelle Smith - 1 x  Bronze Medalist in Diving
  • Grets Small -  2 x Olympian for Alpine Skiing
  • Koti Ngawati -  1 x Olympian Swimming
  • Sean Wroe - 1 x  Olympian  Athletics

Each of these four Olympians gave us an insight to the events they compete in and how their journey in sport has influenced them in their everyday life. From the four Olympians we learnt that through the lessons they have learnt in sport they were able to put these into their real life situations and help them to create a change.  We also learnt how they juggled their work, school and sport life and stayed focused and organised.

After hearing from the Olympians, we heard from  Sabrin who moved to Australia when she was five years old with her family to escape from war. She told us about how when she was young she only felt comfortable when doing her hobbies such as sports as racial difference didn’t matter when competing out on the sporting field. Sabrin has been working to break down barriers about equality with women in sport as she has many times felt judged for playing sports such as football at state level because she is a girl.  Sabrin is now an ambassador for basketball in the Girls 'Make Your Move' campaign and is working with Golf Australia to come up with a new way to make the sport of golf more exciting for young people. Sabrin's goal is about developing community connections. She feels like there’s a big focus on the elite and high-performance side of things and wants to bring a focus on local level sports and participation. Sabrin had a moving story as she has achieved so much in the short time that she has been in the country, and has never doubted herself.

After a lunch break it was time for the keynote speaker of the day, Steve Hooker, the gold medalist and world record breaker at the 2008 Beijing Olympics for pole vaulting. During this time we had a Q and A style session where students in the audience were able to ask questions for Steve to answer. We covered topics from how did he get inspired, what makes him so motivated and how he gains the confidence to do what he does.  During this session we learnt a lot about how leadership and sport are related, and how we can make a change through sports. Steve's words inspired us to take a new outlook on what types of changes we can make in our everyday life. His key message throughout his talk was about the courage he has, and about how this courage has allowed him to be so successful in his career as a sportsman and his current career as a CEO.  He truly inspired us with all of his stories about the hardships he had to face to get to the elite stage he is at.  Throughout the day we took away the following five key messages:

  1. Every person has the ability to create change
  2. Become comfortable with failure
  3. Never be afraid to ask for help
  4. Discover your values and keep them at the forefront of your leadership
  5. All leaders are ordinary people trying to make extraordinary things happen

We are grateful that we had the chance to attend this event as it was extremely inspiring and motivating.

Victorian Netball Championships

Last Wednesday the Junior A Netball team headed to the state finals of the Victorian Netball Championships. The girls had qualified with a wildcard entry after drawing one game and winning all others at their qualifying round earlier in the term.

The girls were very nervous heading into the day but after a comfortable win in their first game they relaxed a little and began to play some scintillating netball. They won all six of their round games (including a one goal win after being down by four goals at half time) to progress to the semi-finals. Unfortunately they lost by three to Rowville (a Netball Academy school who was actually the team they had drawn with in the earlier rounds and who went on to win the grand final) in a very high standard game of netball.

Over 140 schools entered the competition with 21 teams progressing to the finals day so to finish in 3rd place was an absolutely fantastic achievement of which the girls should be very proud.

Ella Razga, Sienna Koop, Bianca Anderson, Hannah Wickstrom, Hannah Mullins, Marley Haenga, Caitlin Isles, Olivia Pope and Issy Humphrey.

SEGAP Sport

The SEGAP Term 3 sport finished well. Junior C Netball and Junior A Volleyball both made the Grand Final games against OLSH. The netball team were two goals down at half time but then lost by ten goals at full time. The Volleyball team won the first set but then went on to lose the next two sets to one.

The girls have been amazing. Thank you to all of the players for their commitment to the after school sports program. They all demonstrated great teamwork and sportsmanship.

Thank you also to the amazing coaches: Mr Camera, Miss Wallace, Mrs Moloney, Miss Flynn, Miss Burke, Mr Brown, Mrs Hood, Miss Neighbour, Mrs McKail and Mrs Cristiano.

Next term the Softball and Tennis competition is played at the College.

Junior: 17 October (back up date 22 October)

Intermediate: 9 October (back up date 29 October).

The final trials will be in Week 10.
