Specialists Updates and Celebrations

Messages from our Specialist team (P.E., STEAM, Music and Mandarin)...

Music

In the Prep Music Program, we have been learning to play the djembe. Steady beat and timing in music has been at the foundation of what we have been doing. We have focused our attention on learning a selection of drum patterns. Producing bass and slap sounds through specific hand positions and techniques has been an important element of our hand drumming work so far. It has been fantastic being back in the music room. We have included plenty of singing dancing in each lesson to celebrate!

P.E.

Grade 1 and 2 have been practising their kicking skills in PE since returning to school. We have studied different kicking techniques and practised many different soccer drills. We have even played some soccer matches. Number Soccer seems to be a favourite so far. Students are split into four teams and each student is given a number in their team. A number (or numbers) are called out and those students have to run to the ball and score in any of the four goals. Students have been excellent at coaching each other and supporting and encouraging their peers.

STEAM

The lockdown rudely interrupted the Grade 3/4 classes right in the middle of the Humpty Dumpty Challenge. Upon the return the school, the kids demanded to complete it, so that is what we are doing! Earlier in the year, all students designed their own capsule and then had to negotiate with some teammates to construct a prototype that everyone in the team was happy with. The prototypes were built and tested. The final stage is the big test...will Humpty Dumpty crack as he falls off the Level 3 balcony???

Mandarin

The Grade 5 and 6 students have been learning about cities around Australia. They learned how to say these major cities in Mandarin and write them in Chinese characters. Next week, we will be focusing on creating a city poster for one of the major cities.
