Year 8 Science

Year 8 students are currently working on their first unit, elements and compounds. Students are studying the periodic table and the atomic make up of elements. Recently, year 8 science classes observed three demonstrations led by their teachers. Students saw first-hand how different elements react.

Reflection by Noah W (Hydrogen Balloon)

The element (hydrogen) filled the inside of the balloon. Measured in gm, It turned into a fireball and was loud. There was a smell of a balloon. The reaction happened because of the heat of a lit fire that touched the balloon and made a big bang. I learned that helium should be used for a balloon instead of hydrogen because it is extremely flammable. The teacher poured the hydrochloric acid into a flask to cover zinc granules, and put the balloon around the tip of the conical flask that allowed the fumes to fill the inside of the balloon. We waited a while until the hydrogen filled up the balloon and lit a fire on a stick and made it touch the balloon, which caused a small explosion.
