Love Is in The Library Air

During “Love Your Library Month” and “February 14th #Library Lovers’ Day,” we will be reflecting on all the ways the school library is special. Personally, books and reading have been a magical part of my life.  I can’t imagine life without them!  Also, the best part of a school library is that you can borrow and use everything for free.  I know when I was growing up that the Library really helped me and my family.  It meant that I could read many more books and much more widely than I ever could have afforded, especially when I was young.  Our school library can do that for you and your family too!  If there is a book that you would like to read and enjoy let us know.  We will purchase it so you can be the first to borrow and read it.

Libraries are also special because they build community.  Many students have been signing up to be Teen Library Advisors to help others in the Library. Sign ups will finish in March.  I couldn’t sum up why Libraries are special and what TLAs do, any better, than in the words used by Ethrath, a Year 9 student at Dandenong High School who said in her TLA application:

“I want to be a Teen library advisor because my favourite place is the library as it is where people get to learn and be comfortable. I have been a teen library advisor since I was in year 7 and would love to be one this year as well. I like to shelve books as it also helps me know about books that I don't know about. I like to do public speaking and I can be a role model for students. Also, I love reading and writing, so being in the library I get to learn more and expand my knowledge.” (Ethrath, Year 9)

Staff and students have been wrapping books for our Blind Date with A Book Display.  This is one of the ways we have been celebrating Library Lovers’ Day and Month. We have been encouraging students to borrow a mystery book and unwrap it at home to celebrate Library Lovers’ Day. It’s a fun way to discover a new book or author and the best part of course is it’s all free to join in.

Libraries are also special because you have the chance to learn something new.  For example, Ms Maree has been offering brilliant card making and calligraphy sessions in the lead up to Valentine’s Day.  It’s a delight to behold all the beautiful cards students have been making to give to someone special who they love, whether it be a family member or friend.

If you have the chance in February, come and tell us what you love about the Library or if there’s something you would like to borrow or learn.
