What is Career Development

You might have already heard the term “Career Development” and what it means – it’s not just about getting a job – as it was defined in the past – where most people could comfortably stay in the one company for most (or sometimes all) of their working life.

Today – career development is defined as a package of life experiences – experiences – and learning that is ongoing – and constantly changing – and possibly a bit chaotic.

These experiences and skills are learned both formally – and informally – through  education, paid and voluntary work, hobbies, interests and other life events. This learning encompasses not only the technical skills required to carry out a role (acquired through education and on-the-job), but also a “transferrable skill set” that is learned informally – and in a variety of settings – but that can be easily carried over to a new job – or industry. The transferrable skillset includes teamwork, communication, presentation skills, critical thinking, initiative, emotional intelligence and many more.

In Summary - Career Development can be described as a series of lifelong learning and personal growth. And everyone – especially our students – will have plenty of opportunities to participate in career development – as the current prediction is that today’s students will expect to have around 18 different jobs across 5 different industries in their formal working life.

Careers Education Program

Every student at our College across years 7-12 will engage in formal careers education as covered by the Victorian Careers Curriculum framework during 2023. This encompasses activities suitable to each year level commencing with I Discover Careers at Year 7 through to I Apply for next steps at Year 12. These are underpinned by the core skills and attributes of: Know yourself, Know your world and Manage your future.
