Head of Middle Years

Mr Steven Tkaczuk

It was a fantastic opportunity to meet many parents and guardians who were able to attend our Middle Years ‘New Parent Information Evening’. Not only was it an opportunity to learn more about what we do across the Middle Years inclusive of the College’s Philosophy of Learning and IB Middle Years Programme, but it was also great to be able to meet many of you and take the time to share your experiences at the College. For those unable to attend the evening, we will endeavour to put together a short presentation outlining the main topics covered.

Year 7 Camp

On 13 February the Year 7's embarked on their camp experience at 'The Summit'. Students were challenged to grow in five key areas - 'having fun, playing all in, making lots of mistakes, getting comfortable being uncomfortable and not going home wondering 'what if’. Everyone rose to the occasion and completed many challenging activities they weren't sure they could do. It was an unbelievable three days of growing as individuals and teams. Now students can take this confidence back into the classroom and into all the challenges ahead of us this year, identify if they are ‘sitting in their comfort zone, stretching themselves or SUPER stretching’ themselves out of their comfort zone. A huge thank you to the contributions of the students, staff and parent helpers who made this camp so enjoyable!

MYP Learning

The IB aims to develop students who grow into responsible citizens, who demonstrate intercultural understanding and respect, and who become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners. These global citizens will work to make this world a better and more peaceful place. (IB, 2008a). To achieve this goal, the IB has selected ten attributes that students must develop, recognize, and demonstrate throughout their academic lives (and beyond).

According to the IB, students must strive to be:

- Balanced

- Communicator

- Inquirer

- Principled

- Caring

- Knowledgeable

- Thinker

- Risk-taker

- Open-minded

- Reflective

This implies an effort by the entire GNLC (Good News Lutheran College) community - faculty, leadership team, students, and families - to learn to respect themselves, others, and the world around them.
