Year 3

Year 3 Welcome back to school! The grade 3 students are settling into their new classes and building relationships with their peers and teachers.

Reading: In Reading, students and teachers have worked together to unpack and establish reading routines such as Independent Reading, Guided Reading and how to choose a ‘Just Right’ book, that will be practiced throughout the year. Our Reading unit this term is understanding persuasive texts. We will do this by looking closely at their features, various persuasive techniques and their effectiveness in helping the author persuade the reader of their opinion! You can support your child at home by asking them to identify the author’s point of view and what persuasive techniques they noticed in their home reading and in conversation.

Writing: It has been amazing to have our new Grade 3 students fill our classrooms up with laughter and curiosity. We are excited to be delving into our first writing unit, persuasive writing. During this unit students will explore the difference between facts and opinions, investigate various forms or persuasion and formulate a range of persuasive texts that we are sure will convince us to agree with them!

Maths: Students have started Maths this year with a bang! Students have been working in small groups to share ideas and strategies they used to solve a problem. Our firstfew weeks of maths are around place Value and length. Students will look at the difference between place value and value and will practice measuring various items using formal and informal measurements.

Science: This term, students will be learning about different types of heat, exploring how heat is created and how to measure heat.

Humanities: This term, students will consider ethics, customs, hobbies and sports, and people who are important in their lives as they develop cards to play in 'The Game Of Life'

Health: In Health, we have started to look at the positive impact of social interaction on self-identity. We will be looking at what makes a good friend and as well as their roles and responsibilities.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

The Year 4 students have settled in well and made new friends already. They are all eagerly awaiting their first incursion for the year, the swimming carnival.

In Literacy, students have been learning about persuasive techniques authors use to persuade their audiences. They have been exploring both fiction and non-fiction texts and examining the different styles authors use to entertain and convince their readers. They are beginning to learn about the importance of using facts to support their own arguments.

In Maths, students have been revising place value. They have been investigating reading, writing, and ordering larger numbers as we get ready to learn and practise new strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems.

During Science, students have learnt about different forces and how they occur in games through the movement of toys.

Year 5

Hello Brookside!

The first few weeks of school have been very busy for us Year 5’s!

In English, we have been analysing persuasive texts. We have been identifying the author’s contention and the different persuasive devices used. We’ve learnt how the devices can be used effectively and will soon be writing our own persuasive pieces.

In Numeracy we are learning about place value. We have been partitioning numbers and rounding them to the nearest thousand, hundred and ten. We are also looking at addition and subtraction and different strategies to solve problems.

Year 5 has introduced back some subjects and added new ones such as Drama and cohort sport, where we will be learning all about the sports we will do in interschool sports next year.

The Year 5’s are very excited for the upcoming swimming carnival, class captain election and NAPLAN in March.

These first few weeks have been lots of fun! We can’t wait to see what 2023 has install for us!

Year 6

In Year 6 students began the year connecting with familiar faces and establishing new friendships in classrooms. Students have been exploring how we are each unique and discussing our talents, families and personal interests which are displayed on ‘Belonging Walls’.

In Maths we are learning about numbers and how our base ten number system works. Classroom libraries have a variety of texts just waiting for readers to open their covers to the wonders inside them.

We are focusing on the writing cycle and have been writing persuasive texts on topics we are passionate about. Our classrooms are beginning to be filled with displays of student learning and we are excited about the year ahead.

Hope that is okay- this is new to me!
