Social and Emotional Learning

In 2023, our Social and Emotional Learning lessons (as part of The Victorian Curriculum) will be based upon the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Program (RRRR).

The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships teaching and learning program is mapped against the personal capabilities of the Victorian Curriculum and is approved and supported by the Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools (MACS).

The RRRR program is an evidence-based, whole-school approach to building a school culture of positive attitudes and behaviours, based on equality. Respected institutions such as VicHealth and the Department of Education are behind the development of the content, and it is further supported by evidence from the World Health Organisation, The Royal Commission into Family Violence and other significant organisations.

The RRRR program supports students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to strengthen their sense of self and build and manage safe and respectful relationships. Through the program, the students will develop their knowledge of the central importance of relationships in their lives, and develop skills in how to build these relationships through positive and respectful interactions and consideration for others. The program covers eight topics over a two-year period.

Topics in the program include:

  • Topic One - Emotional Literacy, the aim of this topic is to help students develop the ability to be aware of, understand, and use information about the emotional states of themselves and others with competence.

  • Topic Two – Personal Strengths builds on the importance of building and using a strengths vocabulary, and identifies the ways in which teachers can use the lesson tools to equip them in their efforts to give positive formative feedback on relational matters.

  • Topic Three and Four – Positive Coping and Stress Management are closely related. The learning activities provide opportunities for children to identify and discuss the value of different coping strategies.

  • Topic Five – Problem-Solving activities introduces students to a range of problem-solving skills, through applied learning tasks, so that they are able to cope with personal, social and ethical dilemmas.

  • Topic Six – Help Seeking activities in this topic area are designed to help students discuss the importance of seeking help and providing peer support when dealing with problems that are too big to solve alone.

  • Topic Seven – Gender and Identity within this topic, promote respect and an appreciation for diversity and difference. It assists students in challenging stereotypes and critique the influence of gender norms on attitudes and behaviour.

  • Topic Eight – Positive Gender Relations activities focus on the development of self-care, peer support and help-seeking skills.

We encourage you as parents to talk to your child/ren about what they are learning in their Social and Emotional (SEL) lessons.
