Year 5 - Year 9 Buddy Up Program

On the final Tuesday of the term, we had the successful launch of the Trinity ‘Buddy Up’ program. The program The program pairs Year 9 students with Year 5 students, fostering positive relationships between students of different age groups and promoting leadership skills. The Year 9 students act as mentors and role models, providing guidance and support to their Year 5 buddies and build the partnership between the two year groups, which will grow into a formal mentoring program when they enter Year 7 and Year 11.

The program runs throughout the academic year, with Year 9 students meeting with their Year 5 buddies once each term. Our first meeting on Tuesday allowed the students to get to know each other through a questionnaire and to get to play some games with each other. I know both year groups had a great morning and are looking forward to their next session in Term Two!

Year 9 Becoming Men – Mentor Movie Night

The final Tuesday of Term 1 marked the third and final event for the term for the Becoming Men program. Over the past month in class, Year 9 students have been exploring the topic of mentors and role models and the ‘Mentor Movie Night’ was designed to foster positive relationships between students and their own mentors, and to provide an opportunity for them to spend quality time together.

The movie on the night was ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’, which explored themes of personal growth, perseverance, and overcoming adversity. Year 9 students and mentors were encouraged to continue the conversation on the way home or in the coming days as to the message within the movie and relating it back to adversity they have faced in their lives, providing an opportunity for students to deepen their connections, and for mentors to offer guidance and support to their mentees.

The event was an important initiative that highlights the importance of mentorship and positive role models in the lives of young people. We would like to thank the Year 9 students and their mentors for their enthusiastic participation, and for making the event such a success. We look forward to continuing to support positive relationships between our students and their mentors, and to seeing our students thrive with the support of their mentors.

Prefect Perspectives

The 2023 school year began in fantastic style, with Term 1 already bringing us so many great events and achievements – a mere glimpse of the great year we still have ahead of us.

The most prominent achievement to start our school year was the triumph of our rowers at this year’s Head of the River. Led by Captain of boats Xavier Nicoletto, the boys dominated the rest of the PSA, winning a grand total of 9 out of the 12 races held on the day. Our rowers put forth the most torrential victory seen in PSA rowing for an extremely long time running, with the forefront of the day being the 1st VIII winning the Challenge Cup by a full boat's length over archrivals Aquinas, alongside a stampede of cheering and running current and Trinity Old Boys. All rowers, coaches and the legendary Mr Jurivich should truly be proud of their success this year, as reflection of the heart and soul they all put into the rowing program as a collective. We are thankful to be part of such a great school.

In Week 6, our swimming team participated in this year’s PSA Interschool Swimming Carnival, a night where sweat was shed, records were broken, and voices were lost. The last 6 months of early mornings in the pool had led up to this night, where the boys swam their hearts out leaving nothing in that pool, achieving a very respectable 4th place, with Scotch taking home the Dr K.G. Tregonning Cup for the first time in 38 years, ending Christ Church’s dominant 5 year streak. As always, the team was chosen based on the results of the Year 7-10 Inter-PCG Swimming Carnivals and the Swimming Age Championships, allowing our best possible team of recent years to be put forth to the competition. Outstanding efforts by Trinity super-fish Xavier Collins and Harrison Famer really helped the team drive towards their best result in the past few years, along with the return of the loud and proud TC army after 2 full years of absence – who really put on a show with their constant passionate roar and cheeky newspaper breaks that completely drowned out all 6 other schools.

An inspiring result was also achieved that week by our mighty 1st Cricket Team in their nail-biting bout with Wesley on Mann Oval. Year 12 favourite Ryan Kaczmarzyk smashed an astonishing 21 off the last over, including a 6 off the last ball to bring home the win – a win that was seen countless times on Instagram and snapchat posts. A win which will always live in the memories of all Trinity Cricketers for years to come.

Some other notable events to occur this Term included last week’s 'Sock it to Sarcoma Day', where the Year 12s wore their own silly socks to school and held both a cake stall and sausage sizzle lunch for the entire school to raise awareness and funds for a cause very close to the hearts of all Year 12 students. In addition, we also held the International Women’s Day Breakfast on Wednesday, 8 March to acknowledge and celebrate the role and achievements of all the inspiring women in our lives. The breakfast headlined with special guests Rachel Hain, Co-founder and Chairperson of Dress for Success Perth, along with Channel 9 Reporter Tracey Vo, who shared their own stories about their lives and the amazing women that inspired them.

The Golden Heritage morning was hosted by the Year 12s earlier during the Term, in which a large group of Golden Old Boys – those who graduated the school over 50 years ago, joined in mass with the Year 12 cohort followed by a morning tea in the staffroom, where the year 12s got to hear and share stories with some fellow Trinity men. Hearing the still clear memories the Old Boys shared, reminded us of the spirit that still holds true within our TC community today, and despite having lived through numerous generations of students passing through the school, the true meaning of what it means to be at Trinity will always be the same.

Finally, at the beginning of this Term our Year 7s were involved in our Becoming Brother Camp to Camp Kelly. Led by our Year 11 Senior Mentors, it was 3 worth of games, team building, bonding and growth as a way for our new Year 7 cohort to get to know one another. We also held our College Open Day in Week 8; a day where potential new parents of the College came to experience the campus and education opportunities Trinity has to offer their son, receiving addresses from myself, Principal Mr Darren O Neil and Junior School Head Prefect Metha Skulmanayeunyong. Following this was a private tour of the school’s outstanding facilities.

Term 1 of 2023 has certainly been successful, highlighted by the great achievements of numerous outstanding TC men, who all put their best foot forward in pursuit of pride for the three crowns. As we begin to move into the rest of the year, I urge all students to look up at the endeavours of the great men they are surrounded by, and to use them as their own motivation to create something truly special. The start of the 2023 Academic year has been one to remember, one that should be used as a launchpad for all Trinity boys to make their 2023 as successful and possible, as we only have so many more great things to come.
