Principal's Message

Easter

Easter is a most solemn time for all Christians as we reflect on the suffering and death of Jesus Christ prior to celebrating his triumphant resurrection. On the evening of Holy Thursday, we specifically recall the Last Supper and the simple, yet powerful example of Christ ‘breaking bread’ and sharing a meal in communion with his followers. On Good Friday, many Catholics will walk the Stations of the Cross, deeply reflecting on the suffering of Jesus, and indeed of all humanity. Easter Sunday then allows us to celebrate Jesus Christ rising again. His death and subsequent resurrection are central to our Faith and a reminder that we too can begin anew.

This week within Religious Education classes and as part of PCG reflections, our students have been reminded to reflect on the personal challenge of renewal that Easter brings. I pray that we can all experience the hope and renewal that comes with the celebration of Easter. Given the circumstances that some around the world continue to suffer from, and yet others from within our own society experience, the Easter message could be particularly relevant. According to the Gospel of John, Jesus spoke the following words to his disciples on the night before He died. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still and trust in Me” (John 14:1)

In his recent Easter message, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB reflected on Easter being a time when we can seek our own personal renewal by answering the constant call of God to be with Him. The Archbishop says:

“This is, perhaps, the great challenge of our Christian lives. God is always ready to come to us, to be with us and to accompany us on our life’s journey. God is the giver of all good gifts – but God does not force these gifts on us: we must say “yes” as Mary did, with openness and trust, ready to abandon the fiction that we can manage quite well without the Lord in our lives and, instead, be eager to allow the Lord to fill us with His love and lead us forward.

In the Book of Revelation, there is a beautiful image which can perhaps help us to understand all this a little better.  “Look,” says Jesus, “Behold I am standing at your door knocking. If one of you hears me and opens the door I will come in to share a meal, side by side with you” (Rev 3:19-20).

Easter assures us that the Lord is alive today... He stands at the door of our lives and of our hearts and continues to knock, asking us to let Him in.  He wants to make His home within us. Accept this offer made in generosity and love. Begin to live your lives in Christ and allow Him to enrich the lives of all you love. Let your restless hearts be stilled by the power of His gift of Easter peace.”
