Celebrating our Student's Achievements at SOC and Externally
Congratulations Claire and keep up the good (reading) work!!!
We are all aware of the fact that regular reading can provide numerous benefits, ranging from improved health to increased intelligence and an increase in knowledge of a variety of topics if we make a habit of reading books daily therefore now that term 1 is officially over and although we have a plethora of avid readers at South Oakleigh College, both physical and digital copies, we have decided to present Claire Yeung with a $100 Campion’s Book voucher to use throughout the year.
Claire is a well-known bibliophile who has shown an exceptional reading ability throughout the last 5 years of her schooling and although in a very challenging year level now (year 11) she continues to read more books monthly than many other enthusiastic readers do.

Chess Club: Competitions
There are many avid Chess players at South Oakleigh College ranging from Beginners to Advanced. The team spirit that exists among these students demonstrates their ability to compete and support each other at all times.
14 SOC Chess players of various ages and levels attended their 1st chess tournament of the year at the Glen Eira college campus a few weeks ago. Many wins, draws and losses accounted for the day but not once did the students underestimate the abilities of their opponents. They took the opposition seriously and gave their best effort.
They look forward to the next tournament coming up soon hence their daily practices during lunchtime and in particular “Chess club on Fridays". Thank you to Aditya for his ongoing encouragement and support as a Captain in 2022-23 and Zaynab as last year's captain.

Victorian State Schools Spectacular
The Victorian State Schools Spectacular is a multi-million-dollar project involving state schools and students from all across Victoria. The annual show happens in September at John Cain Arena. You can either be involved through your school and join the mass dance (3,000 students) or the mass choir (1,000 students).
If you are a training singer or dancer or instrumentalist, you can audition to be on the stage and go through a professional audition and rehearsal process. I am part of the Victorian State School’s choir. We are 35 students that do the harmonizations for the primary vocalist (which I aspire to be one day). Out of the 5,000 students that auditioned only 1% made it in. I am very proud to be part of that 1%! The rehearsals were amazing! We are practising a range of songs in 4-part harmonies, and I have made friends from all around Victoria!
There is a range of opportunities open for so many people! My brother (Osher) is part of the tech crew (the whole production is done by students). He does stage management where he manages where everything must be and where people are to make sure the show runs smoothly. There are also positions for lighting, sound, visuals and editing the recording, which goes to channel 7 at the end of December.
We are very proud to be representing South Oakleigh College this year, on stage and behind the scenes!
