End of Term 1: Career News
SOC students were able to participate in two industry immersion days throughout Term 1. These excursions were facilitated by Monash Tech School and provided a great opportunity for students to learn more about a particular industry and the careers, training and tasks involved in that field. Not only are the days immersive and filled with activities and experiences but students get to meet and interact with industry experts and professionals in that area as well.
In early March we visited the International Avalon Airshow at Avalon Airport. This was an exciting opportunity as it was the first time the exhibition was back up and running after 4 years. Students toured through the expo halls stopping at a number of different booths for presentations from a variety of exhibitors including, the Bureau of Meteorology, Australian Space Agency, Nova Systems and Airbus. Students participated in a Q&A with Space Command and spent the afternoon touring the airshow, exploring the different simulations and aircraft and watching the flying display.
On International Women’s Day, a number of our students attended the training ground of the AFL and AFLW St Kilda Saints team. The day revolved around women in sports and the many opportunities that exist for women in the industry. Students were able to meet and hear from some of the Saints AFLW team and get a better sense of the different careers that exist within the club and AFL as a sport. Students played a game of AFL 9s while wearing the Catapult tracking technology that the Saints use and then unpacked their data in a workshop on elite programming, data analysis and social media in the afternoon.
There are many industry immersion days coming up this year but Monash Tech School have also partnered with Roadmap Education to provide access to a suite of career podcasts for SOC students. These podcasts feature interviews with young people working in entry-level positions using STEM skills and qualifications in their roles.
These episodes can be accessed through this link, Course and Career Chat Podcast | Monash Tech School.
