SAPSASA Cricket Update

On Monday 3rd April, Magill School visited East Marden Primary School for the opening round of the SAPSASA Knockout Cricket competition.

The weather was excellent and provided us with a clear sunny morning to play the game.

Our captain Gurveer did the coin toss with the East Marden captain and after losing the toss we were sent to bat. We started brightly with the bat, Gurveer and Emad hitting the ball into the gaps, running well and conserving their wicket. We unfortunately lost Gurveer before he really got settled into his innings and got the chance to flourish bringing Udhav to the crease. Both he and Emad batted well and continued to move the total on and we had a good platform for our batting innings at the 10 over, halfway point.

As we entered the 2nd 10 overs we unfortunately began losing wickets at regular intervals and were restricted with our scoring by a disciplined East Marden bowling attack. Our top scorer with the bat was Udhav who made a stylish 21 before being unfortunately out to a very good runout. Magill continued to be put under pressure with good quality bowling and fielding and were restricted to 55 at the end of our allotted 20 overs batting, leaving us a little short on runs and behind where we would like to be.

East Marden then commenced their innings and we bowled very well in response, bowling minimal extras and a good line and length. We picked up regular wickets, breaking partnerships early on and tried really hard in the field to restrict the runs and take our catches. The pick of our bowlers was Curtis who bowled exceptionally well and was even on a hat trick at one point. We were able to take 8 East Marden wickets before they eventually edged ahead of us and scored the winning runs.

I would like to thank all of the boys and their families for all of their hard work and commitment in the lead-up with morning training sessions in the weeks before our match. The boys all contributed really well and most importantly, played the game in the right spirit, demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship, and were all wonderful representatives of our school.

It was a pleasure coaching the boys this year and I wish them all the best in their future cricket endeavours.
