Student achievements

Congratulations to the following students:

Meg Brewer and Hayley Newsham-West (Year 8), who represented Tasmania at the U15 state hockey championships held in Darwin during the school holidays. The pair played well in tough, hot and humid conditions and learnt many life lessons - both on and off the field, living away from their families for the duration the competition.

Iris Bouwmeester, Vara Marunda (Year 12), Maria Kothris (Year 9) and Matilda Greenhill (Year 8), who broke one of SMC's longest droughts in the game when they powered they way through to the First Grade Tennis grand finals. Despite losing to Collegiate, we are immensely proud of the players for their spirited performance and commend each student for the dedication, resilience and grit they have shown throughout the season.

Lucy Gluskie (Year 12) who - together with her brother in the co-driver seat - won her class at the first round of the Tasmanian Rally Championships. The championships test competitors on their consistency, precision and speed behind the wheel as they take on the forestry roads around Lilydale. Well done, Lucy and good luck for your upcoming heats!

Jessica Smith (Year 10), pictured below, who recently competed in the Australian Track and Field Championships in Brisbane where she won a gold medal in the Women's U17 2000m Steeple Chase, with a time of 6:53. In winning the event, Jessica finished 13 seconds ahead of silver and took seven seconds off her previous personal best time. Great job, Jess. You should be very proud of yourself.

Isabelle Hoggett (Year 11), Isobel Gray (Year 10), Kate Fox (Year 9) and Macy Devine (Year 7), who also competed in the Australian Track and Field Nationals. Macy went on to contest at the Little Athletics Melbourne Nationals in Melbourne recently, along with fellow Year 7 student, Paige Nowland. Well done to all our superstar athletes on your hard-earned success.

Imogen Ransley (Year 7), who represented Tasmania at the U12 Australian Claycourt Tennis Championships in Canberra from 18–23 April. It's great to see your hard work paying off in spades.

Rose Smith (Year 9), who has been selected in the state judo team for the third consecutive year. Amazing news!

Taylah (Year 11) and Macey Hayes (Year 4), who recently competed in the Tasmanian State Judo Titles, with Macey taking home a gold medal and Taylah winning gold in all three of her divisions. Well done to you both on your top podium finishes!

Mackenzie Thomas (Year 10), who recently competed at the Australian Junior Amateur Championships—the biggest amateur golfing tournament in Australia. As the only female in the state to compete at the prestigious event, Mackenzie was ranked the 'best performed' Tasmanian, finishing in equal 20th place in the girls' event. Adding to her success, Mackenzie improved over the duration of the event to finish 15-over-par.

Holly Teale (Year 11), who secured a spot on the Rowing Tasmania Schools Pathway Team 2023. An initiative of Rowing Australia, the Tasmanian Schools Pathway VIII Program allows participants to experience the national rowing selection process, compete against their school counterparts from around the country and work with high-level coaches and support staff.

Well done on this well-deserved achievement, Holly. We look forward to seeing what next steps await you in your rowing journey.

Ruby Berry, Bella Carter and Sophie Robertson (Year 9), who teamed up with St Virgil's College to sail in the Tasmania Schools Teams Racing State Championships, which took place at Sandy Bay Sailing Club during the school holidays. We are so proud of the students, who spent two gruelling days on the water, and we're excited to have an SMC team on the water again!

Emily Yan and Sophie Johns (Year 4) who were announced as the dual winners of the Lian Tanner National Storytelling Competition. The students' exciting, action-packed stories followed the adventures of a fierce dragon, impressing Lian with their imaginative narratives and depth of maturity.
