Primary Science and Engineering Challenge

"On Tuesday 2nd May, a group of Year 6 students travelled to the Narrabri Crossing Theatre with Miss Arthur and Shirley Johnson. We competed against other schools in the Armidale Diocese for a Science and Engineering challenge.

When we arrived we got coloured wrist bands for our allocated partner. After we stopped drooling over the smell of popcorn at the canteen, we went outside and had our recess. Then it was finally time to line up in the hall for the challenges we were about to face.

For the first rotation, we went to our selected colour groups and some of our challenges were Mars Buggy, Helter Skelter Shelter, Indestructible Bridge, String Along, etc. At first the challenges were hard but we worked it out along the way with great collaboration with our buddy.
LUNCH TIME! Volunteers provided us with appetising burgers. They have a tremendous field where we could play with the other schools, but we decided to battle the schools in a handball game instead.

The last rotation had finally come!  We had talked to each other about how hard the challenges were.  After everyone had completed their challenges it was time for the bridge test, it was Pink groups’ time to shine.
Phillies were cheering!  It was Zach’s turn to test their bridge.  The bridge was placed in the slot and the judge folded the metal rail over the top. The cart made it through the first round!  Then the judge put 1 metal slab on the cart, then 2 slabs then 3 slabs.  We got up to the mega slab that no one had made it past.  It all depended on Lila and Zach’s bridge to make it past……………… THEY MADE IT AND THE SCHOOLS WENT WILD!

In the end, St Philomena’a came third overall! It was the end of the day and we hopped on the bus and travelled back to school to get picked up.  We all decided that our favourite activities were Mars Buggy, Indestructible Bridge and the Helter Skelter Shelter, and of course Chris the organiser.
