Welcome back for Term 2.

Today I am sharing information from Asthma Australia especially for families who have a student with asthma as the cooler weather arrives.

As the weather begins to cool and we continue to face Coronavirus, it is more important than ever to stay asthma well this winter. Have a healthy diet with fresh fruit and vegetables for vitamins and minerals , check that family members are getting enough sleep and continue to have fresh air and exercise.

A reminder for those  people whose asthma gets worse during winter that they should be taking their preventer medications daily even when well, to be protected during the coming winter months. Seasonal viral respiratory infections are amongst the most common triggers for flare-ups , including potentially serious asthma in adults and children and so a Flu vaccination is recommended. Students with asthma are eligible for a free flu shot and this can be arranged with your own GP or an appointment can be made with our school Doctor.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting one in nine Australians or 2.7 million people and winter months can make asthma harder to control, resulting in more hospitalisations. Research shows that people who use their  prescribed  asthma preventer and have a written Asthma Action Plan are less likely to need hospital care, which could help in reducing strain on the health system.

Asthma Triggers-Learn your triggers and how to manage them.

A trigger is anything that can cause you to have asthma symptoms. Some of the most common ones include cold or flu viruses, pollen, dust mites, exercise, tobacco smoke and even pet hair!

It's important to be aware of these triggers so that you can take steps to avoid them or lower your exposure. For example, using air filters, washing our bedding regularly and avoiding smoking areas can all help. And don't forget, keeping up to date with your asthma medicine is the best way to prepare for any triggers!

Learn more about managing your asthma triggers from the Asthma Australia Website.
