Our Preston Market Visit

After having walked around some of the local streets of Preston to learn about our local community, this week it was time for Foundation and Year 1/2 to visit the Preston Market… and what an experience it was!

From seeing all the amazing stores and speaking to different shop owners, to crepe demonstrations and different taste tests, to dancing to the music from a busker and drawing in a crowd, to speaking with an old Sacred Heart student and losing a tooth in a hot jam donut - What a day!

How to Make Chocolate by Yash Dev

Ingredients

*½ cup of cocoa butter

*½ cup of virgin coconut oil

*½ cup of raw organic cocoa powder

*¼ - ½ cup of agave syrup (for sweetening up the chocolate)

*(Optional you can add organic honey, stevia or raw cane sugar if you want)

Requirements -

  • Grater,
  • small cup or a bowl,
  • a shallow pan
  • a plate or an ice cube tray can work.

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Method

Step 1: Grate ½ cup of cocoa butter. It will be melted easier once it has been grated. Measure 1⁄2 cup of coconut oil.

Step 2: Put cocoa butter and coconut oil in water in a small heated cup or a bowl. Place the cup or bowl in the shallow pan that has warm water,  not boiling. Stir the oil and butter until it becomes smooth.

Step 3: Measure 1/2 cup of cocoa powder.  If you would like to add some other dry ingredients then measure them out now and mix them by stirring them together with the cocoa powder.

Step 4: Pour the dry ingredients into the bowl with the melted butter and also oil, Stir constantly until it becomes smooth.

Step 5: If you would like to sweeten up your chocolate more, then pour 4-6 teaspoons of agave nectar into the bowl and stir (If you don’t want to sweeten up your chocolate then skip this step)

Step 6: Get someone to check the aspect of the chocolate like to check if the chocolate is sweet enough. You can also add any other things now like - dried nuts, chillies, etc.

Step 7: Pour in the melted chocolate on an ice cube tray/pan or even a plate.

Step 8 : Place the chocolate in the refrigerator for 1 hour or you can place the chocolate inside the freezer for 30 minutes.

Finally, the goal has been achieved for what you’ve made and now you can enjoy the astonishing flavor of the tasty chocolate.

The Day at Camp   by Onella

It was finally the day, the day we were going to camp! I was so happy because this was my first time going to a camp and I was going with my new school. We left home at 7:30am, which was earlier than the normal time to leave for school because this time we had a bus waiting.  My luggage was heavy and black with a pink ribbon to help me find it when I got there. When I arrived I met my friends; Jacob , Yianna and Harper. Then in a couple of minutes the bus came. Afterwards, it was the time to say goodbye to our lovely families for three days. I gave a big hug to my mum and dad and said good bye.

So we had taken off . First  we went to a Koala Conservation Park. We saw koalas and they were sleeping in the trees and some were eating leaves. It was so natural, then we went to a mini golf park where we played mini golf. We had to play every single hole. Lots of children enjoyed it. Even me.

Then we went back to the bus to get to the place where we were about to rest for the night but we weren’t resting now . So we left our bags and came back out again.

We were about to go to a penguin parade . So we went there. So we had twenty minutes time to wait to go to the beach, so we just walked around the twenty minutes. Then it was time to go to the beach and see the penguins.

It was like 9.00 o’ clock in the night . And the penguins started coming out. They were so tiny. And it was freezing cold outside, but we managed .It was so fun. After the event we were walking through the boardwalk  then while we were walking me Jacob, Yianna , Harper and Fortunato lost the crew! We did not know what to do. Luckily we met a teacher called Violet. She came on camp with us so we followed her and we went back to the bus safely.

We met Marty and we all explained what happened.

The Amazing life of a Little Blue Penguin by Jemimah

Introduction

The Little  penguin species or known as the Eudypluta Minor, standing about 30 to 35 cm in height the penguin weighs approximately one kilogram when fully grown. Its upper body and flippers are slate blue or blue-grey in colour, with  the underside and throat being white. The little penguin's bill is black, its  feet are pale pink, and its eyes are silvery grey.

Diet

The Little Penguins  feed in shallow waters, hunting for small fish, as well as diving to the sea floor for squid,Barracouta, anchovies, red cod , and krill .Little penguins spend approximately 80 percent of their lives in the ocean, only coming to shore to maintain their burrows, breed and raise their young, as well as moult their old feathers.

Behaviour

The Little penguin will  consume the equivalent of its body weight in food every day . Little blue penguins are timid and will scurry under anything  for cover when they come back from looking for a meal. They will also hang out in burrows, holes, or under buildings to rest. They are nocturnal and diurnal , or more active at night , and come back to shore in the evening.

The Little penguin is a top ocean  predator , playing an important role  in the marine ecosystem food web , and a valuable indicator species with changes in their population alerting us to changes in ocean health , such impacts to prey  they eat.
