Rural Students Cafe

Year 11 THS Hospitality

Students from regional and remote schools gained real-world work experience running a café at the Royal Easter Show. The café is run by Year 11 and 12 hospitality students who gain valuable skills and work experience towards their vocational education, training qualifications & HSC.

Mrs Cooper & THS students Emily Mason, Phoebee Lyons, Hayley Williams, Davina Evans & Mia Paynter travelled to Sydney to work in the student's cafe for 3 days during the school holidays. Students had the opportunity to experience front & back of house operations. The front of house duties included setting up the cafe, making mocktails & coffee, serving food & beverages, clearing tables & greeting customers. The back of house duties included food preparation, making the tasting plates which included a sausage roll with homemade tomato sauce, vegetarian quiche, chicken sandwich, mini pavlova & a piece of cheesecake.

The 3-day rotation involved 4 participating schools with approximately 20-24 students. Tenterfield High School worked alongside students from Uralla Central School, Junee High School & Manilla Central School. It was an incredible experience for the students involved, Mrs Cooper said "it was amazing to watch the girls grow and develop over the 3 days and they were excellent representatives for Tenterfield High School".

The profit made from the Rural Students Cafe goes back to the participating schools to use to upgrade kitchens and equipment.

A personal highlight from the experience was meeting "Fast Ed" from Better Homes & Garden's on the final day! Well done to Mrs Cooper & our students for representing THS with such enthusiasm & dedication.
