Grade 4 M Persona & Metaphor  Writing

(Week 2&3)

The Seed   by Thomas

I'm a little seed, lying on a shelf in the garden store. I am tiny but tenacious. I have a hard, brown shell. I have one a wish and that is that I hope someone will buy me. After they buy me, I will wait excitedly for them to plant me. Then I will be able to germinate, and start to grow.

After two years, I will have new leaves, a strong body and a happier life. I close my eyes and wish hard!

The Cat by Nathan

I love to sleep! Lying here on my pretty, pink and white checked blanket I feel so warm and cosy. My lovely human friend has laid my blanket in front of this large open window. The sun is shining on my silvery, grey fur warming me right down to my bones. My life is fantastic!

Wonder what's for lunch? I hope it’s not stinky tuna again. Don’t the humans know that my favourite food is steaming hot roast chicken. Especially the kind that comes in the paper bag with the painting of a red rooster on the side.

I wish the children would hurry up and get out of their beds so we can play. I know it’s not a school day but it’s nearly lunch- time!

I can’t wait to play the game we invented called sneak attack. My little paws are super-fast and last time we played I actually managed to surprise Nathan and hit his hand before he could pull it away. Come to think of it my nails are looking a bit long and sharp. I think I will scratch them on the red couch to shorten them a bit before any witnesses are around to see me.

My family is fantastic but sometimes they are a little too noisy and disturb me when I am trying to nap - like now!

I love where I live and who I live with...hang on a minute do I smell LUNCH!

Albert Einstein by Tom C

I’m sitting in my laboratory looking at the past theories and equations on my blackboard. Gazing at the equation E=MC2 I’m still astonished at how I figured that out.

Scratching my head of short, bushy, white and grey hair a thought enters my head. A sudden burst of butterflies shoots into my stomach. I’ve just remembered. The results for my theory of relativity arrive tomorrow. Even if my theories are proven correct, I will still be nervous that the world may not accept my thoughts and theories. I have dedicated my life to improving our understanding of the world and this is the most important moment of my life.

Yet again I spend hours and hours of my life thinking, thinking, thinking. The world just simply has to accept it.

The Arctic Fox by Matt

It’s freezing outside. I am so comfy in my new home. It’s warm and cosy, and I feel like I could sleep forever. The snow is falling and the ice is getting thicker. It will be a long, cold winter. As nightfall arrives, the snow continues to fall. It’s too dangerous to go outside. The only sounds I can hear is the soft snow dropping on the ground and the trees swishing side to side in the coldest of winds.

Daytime arrives and it’s time to hunt for seals. My belly rumbles as I see a large seal swim under the ice. It starts to break the pack ice open and I get ready to pounce. As the ice opens the seal jumps onto the slippery, icy surface…I pounce!

The seal launches itself back into the sea and safely swims away. This time he got away. Next time he won’t.

Jaws   by Jude

I swim fast and swift, shooting through the dark gloomy water.

I leap out of the water with great power to catch that scrumptious seal I spot with my amazing eyesight. I chomp down on the tasty meal, tearing it apart with my razor sharp teeth. This is one of my favourite meals, but sometimes my curiosity gets the better of me and I eat things that I shouldn't.

Occasionally I feel ill from the weird things that I mistakenly eat for food.

Humans prod and poke at my body trying to place a tag on me for tracking purposes. I don't make it easy for them as I thrash around wildly trying to escape.

People splash chaotically above me, fearful of my ferocious jaws and hoping desperately not to become my next meal. I swim away from the shallow waters near the warm, sunny beach and dive back into the murky depths of the dark ocean.

The Mountain   by Isla

I stand tall all day feeling the snow and rain pour down all over me. I am lonely. I have to talk to myself because there is no one else around me to hear my conversation. I enjoy the feel of animals' feet walking over my body - it makes me feel relaxed.

I’m always so cold but I feel superior because of my height. I’m so tall the view is amazing from where I stand. I can look up and see the sky, and when I look down I see the city lights and the villages surrounded by all the trees.

A Shark   by Jasmine

I am swimming in the deep blue ocean looking for my next meal. I am all alone because I have no friends. I think I scare them off with my sharp teeth and large size. But I’m really only a gentle fish.

I admit I sometimes get distracted and swim too close to shore. And yes, I’ve sometimes found some food there but when I take a bite I realise it’s not a seal so I spit it back out. It is usually one of those pesky humans. These tasteless accidental snacks are not what I’m after even though the humans seem to think I do it deliberately. I like to swim beneath the depths of the ocean and prefer to eat the fish and animals that live down there.

I think I’m a softy at heart and a bit of a scaredy cat too. I don’t go looking for trouble it just finds ME! My life is just a long, lonely trip swimming around the oceans waiting for the day when I’m not made out to be a giant, scary monster of the deep.

The Pug by Meera

I have glittery brown eyes and a shiny black nose! Some people don’t like the way I look but that doesn’t bother me because my owner loves me! She brushes the hair on my smooth tan body.

She scratches me behind my ears when I’m happy and cuddles me when I’m sad. She pats me good night and then rocks me to sleep each night.

In the mornings she shares her food with me and then serves me my dog food. When we go to the park together she brings my favourite red ball and we play fetch.

After that we go to my favourite shop, the Dog Warehouse. I love it because it’s full of treats!

The Lion by Gus

I am sitting here sunning myself on a large rock in the middle of my pride watching my friends drag in their breakfast. My short, thick yellow hair warms up in the sunshine and I feel so relaxed. Then my stomach begins to rumble as I watch the other lions enjoying their tasty meal… I didn’t realise I was so hungry.  Time to go hunting. I look around and I notice a group of impalas running across the plains in the distance.

I gather together the lions lazing around in the shade of the trees because I know they haven’t eaten either. They will be hungry too! We sneak slowly and cautiously towards the prey, careful not to scare them away. Suddenly I lunge forward, and with my big powerful body at full speed chase the impalas. Using my large strong jaws, I bite and kill my food. I drag my prey back to my pride and the other lions follow. We enjoy our meal and then I head back to my rock to rest.

A Cloud by Annie

I am floating high in the sky with all my friends. Wind is my best friend. She helps me move around to new places. Neither of us like staying still very long, we are always on the move. I’ve been around the world so many times I’ve lost count.

When I get cold I snow, when I get sad I rain. When I get mad I storm!

When I’m happy, I’m light and fluffy. I like to perform for people by making shapes in the sky.

Sometimes I like to get really low to the ground so I can see people’s faces. Normally when I look down they look just like tiny specks.

The Lamp Post by Avery

I am old and rusty but I still stand tall and proud in the middle of the town square. I open and close my eyes as the sun rises and falls. I’m glad I can help my human friends by leading them with my light through the dark.

As day light brightens the sky I see children running around playing happily. Older people are strolling around the walking track in the new park. As I age and rust I see the neighbourhood around me growing bigger and better and I wonder how long it will be before I am no longer needed.

The Notebook by Rosie

I lie flat and new on a desk waiting to be opened. My front cover is as pretty as a sunset and my pages are crisp and white. My spiral spine is swirly and tight because I haven’t been used before. I wonder what she is going to fill my pages with. Maybe a house design, portrait or a landscape. I ‘m so excited, I can't wait for her to come and start.

I hear someone come quietly into the room. The lamp on the desk shines brightly over me. She picks up a pencil and starts moving it over my page. I can feel her drawing an outline of a house. I feel so happy to be useful. It's done! A house design full of love and colour. She tucks me under her arm and walks away ready to share her drawing with her family. I feel proud of what she's done. Finally, she places me back on the desk and now I must wait until she returns again another day.

The Motorbike by Luca

I am big, fast and bright orange. I fly down the straight, wind blowing in my face. Revving really high in fourth gear, I see the cars and spectators as a blur on the side of the track. They’re watching me speed past.

I hope my rider stops before the corner. It’s really going to hurt if I slide into a tree! Slamming on the brakes I skid in the sticky mud. Bumping up and down I enter the corner, and speed out the other side. I make it safely through the corner, now let’s see how I go with the jump.

Going as fast as I can, I hit the jump. Slowly I let off the power to the back wheel. Flying through the air I land softly. Then I speed up for the next huge jump. I feel so powerful. It’s exhilarating.

My bright, orange body turns a dirty brown colour as mud sprays all over me. My exhaust pipe is burning. But the pain is worth it. Loud cheers come from the crowd because I just won my first race!

The Dog by Finn R

I’m lying in the sun behind the window, rolling around in the warmth, dreaming of… One of my brothers just ran past with a basketball under his arm and my Mum is tip-tapping on her keyboard.

Oh what was that? Is that the bath?

Quick hide under my brother's bed. I’ll be safe under there, I hope. He’s calling my name, eek. I hate baths because they make my tiny paws cold. My dad baths me because he wants me to stop scratching and to make me fluffy.

Ok, bath time is done. They found me. I didn't get out of it!

I might go warm up in the sun again and have a snooze.

Hang on.... my brother is putting on his shoes. We must be going for a walk.

I’M SO EXCITED! I’M SO EXCITED!

Oh, NO! They’ve left the house without me.

Now I'm sad.

They’re back! YAP! YAP! YAP!

My brother is carrying a bag. “Sit, sit.”

“Um, um which one is that? Oh yes, bum down head up. I’m doing it. YUMMY! I got a treat for that.”

Dinner time.

“Mmm, steak. I love being a dog!”

Grade 4 Similes and Metaphors Week 3

THE ROLLERCOASTER   Finn B

The first time I went on a rollercoaster it was so nerve racking. As soon as I sat down I wanted to jump right back out. I was shaking like a leaf and I had butterflies in my stomach. Then suddenly the rollercoaster started moving. My heart was thumping loudly, like a beating drum. The rollercoaster was moving as fast as a cheetah running across the savannah. It tore across the theme park, high one moment, low the next. I was paralysed with fear and I felt like I was going to fall out of the sky and drop to earth! When the ride was over I thought to myself, I'm never doing that again!  Finn B

THE ROLLERCOASTER   Henry

The first time I went on a roller coaster I was both scared and excited. My nerves made me feel as jumpy as a kangaroo. When the ride started I was scared, as it was going up side down, sideways and all around.  But half way through it I felt more relaxed and I began to enjoy the ride. I was like a kid in a candy store. I still felt terrified but I was also excited. Each time I went upside down on the ride I felt like I was going to slide out of the seat and fall from the sky like a bird. The ride was quick and so was my heart beat, which was beating like a drum in my chest.  Faster and faster it went, until finally it started to slow down like a train pulling into a station.  The ride eventually stopped, which was lucky, because I was about to spew.

THE ROLLERCOASTER     Nathan

I finally made up my mind. I'm not going to be a chicken; I'm going to ride the rollercoaster. I begged my Mum to come with me, and we headed off to join the queue. I was as excited as a child on Christmas morning. In my mind I pictured myself soaring across the sky like a cloud on a windy day.

Eventually it was our turn. We stepped into the carriage and were locked into our seats. The ride began and it felt like I was locked inside a moving jail cell. Our carriage climbed higher and higher. It was creeping slowly up the hill and then reached the peak. Suddenly, it tipped over the top and we shot downwards as fast as a ball being shot out of a cannon. We were whipping left and right. I was as scared as a mouse being chased by a cat. As the ride was coming close to the end we were suddenly drenched by water from above. I was shocked. I didn't know whether to scream or laugh but decided to choose both. As the ride came to a stop I was as wet as the grass on a rainy day. We stepped out of the carriage and my mum was surprised to hear me yell, “Let's do it again!”  Nathan

THE BASKETBALL GAME

The first time I played a game of basketball I was as nervous as a kid starting school. As I walked into the stadium I saw my friends, who were my teammates, and that made me feel more confident. As the referee blew the whistle to begin the game, I immediately felt competitive and hungry for the ball. I chased the ball with all my might and ripped it from an opponent's hands. As I ran with the ball, I passed it to my team mate who then passed it back to me. I ran as fast as a cheetah and scored a goal. We were losing but we slowly began to make our way back into the game.  As we persevered, we took the lead.  It was neck and neck for a while but then the other team were two points ahead.  We were all exhausted and with only two seconds left on the clock we needed three points to win.  My teammate went up for a shot, but was fouled as he did.  Amazingly the shot went in.  It was a draw! The referee blew the whistle and gave my teammate one free shot because of the foul. At this point, I was like a butterfly, fluttery and nervous.  We all encouraged him and as he took the shot, it flew swiftly through the air like a bird and swung around the hoop before sinking into the net. WE HAD WON THE GAME!  Jude

ROLLERSKATING   Meera

I felt as happy as a lark when I heard that I was invited to my friend’s roller skating party! When I arrived people were skating around the rink as fast as the wind. But I had butterflies in my tummy. As I stood watching the skaters it was like the butterflies were growing bigger and bigger in my stomach. I felt like I was about to explode. BOOM! I couldn’t stop shaking and I needed my friends to help me step onto the rink.

I didn’t want to make a fool of myself in front of everyone but I wobbled as I skated and soon fell over. Then I saw the black wall. It was gold to me because the black wall is there to help beginners. My problem was that it was in the middle of the rink and people were skating all around me!

I only had one choice. It was to skate. I started to run and before I knew it I was moving. A few minutes later my arms relaxed, my brain overtook my fear and my legs kept on going. I was finally skating!

MINECRAFT SURVIVAL   Amy

I was as excited as a puppy the first time I played Minecraft Survival. I spawned in a village, I looked in a building, I discovered a chest and looted it. Darkness arrived and monsters started to spawn! I wanted to explore but a zombie began hitting me! I started to run! I wanted to dig hole and escape but I couldn’t because the zombie hit me and hit me until I was dead! I spawned back at the village and suddenly there were lots of zombies! I hid in the church. I was as afraid as a hedgehog. I tried to run for it but I felt like a deer being chased by lions! I dug myself in a hole and hid until daylight because the monsters would burn to a crisp in the sun. Hiding was as easy as pie. Daylight finally arrived. I wanted to get go as far away from the village as I could. I found a cave and I decided to enter. I had a pickaxe so I could mine, but I saw a zombie and quit the world.

Playing Minecraft Survival filled me with fear!   Amy

WALK THE PLANK    Finn R

Once I went on a cruise ship and one of the activities was called, ‘Walk the Plank’. When I put my name down to do this I was as excited as a dog when they’re going for a walk.

When the lady was putting my harness on, I realized how windy it was and I was as scared as a mouse getting chased by a cat. The lady said it was really windy and to hold on tight which made me even more scared. My legs were so wobbly as I began walking out along the plank.

I felt superman brave but also terrified and my legs were now like jelly. The wind was as strong as an elephant and it felt like it was going to push me off the plank. I knew if I fell I would be hanging but at least I would have a nice view! You could see for miles out into the wavy ocean.

My family were all watching me. None of them were brave enough to put their name down to do this, not even my big brother Xavier.

The boat was rocking and I felt like I was going to fall but I made it to the end, now I just had to get back! Part of me wanted to go back really fast but I also wanted to go extremely slow. It felt like it took forever to get back but it was really quick! I got off the plank and went to find some food. All that excitement had made me as hungry as a horse!   Finn R
