Term 2, 2022

ANZAC DAY

On ANZAC Day for 2022 the Dromana College Student Leaders and Music Department continued to represent the school to the highest standard. The College Captains, Krystabel Forward, Francesca Montgomery, Kyneisha Czowhan and Melody Johnson attended the Dawn Service at the Red Hill/Dromana R.S.L. Along with some Dromana staff they sat as invited guests at the gunfire breakfast. At the breakfast our College Captains chatted with RSL members, returned veterans and local members of parliament before helping pack up the restaurant area at the end of the breakfast.

A great number of student leaders and students from the Music Department then marched from the R.S.L to the Dromana Cenotaph for the 9am service.

The Dromana College choir sang ‘In Flanders Fields’ and joined the Dromana Primary School in singing ‘We Are Australian’ and the ‘Australian National Anthem’.  A wreath was laid by the College Captains on behalf of the Dromana College community in recognition of those who paid the ultimate price for their country.

Dromana College should be very proud of the students who represented the school and the commemoration of ANZAC Day for 2022.

TERM 3 UPCOMING MODEL UNITED NATIONS

In Term 3 this year Dromana College will have the honour of hosting a Model United Nations where other schools will attend. The topic we are exploring is, ‘Pathways to Peace: Addressing war, conflict and international security.’ The Model United Nations Association of Victoria will be running the event and Dromana College as the host school has the opportunity to provide approximately 60 students with the chance to research and represent a country in this process.

A Model United Nations is a representation of how the real United Nations operates in New York. As an organisation the United Nations aims to brings nations together to address major issues facing humanity. Within the Model United Nations, a draft resolution is debated by all countries with the goal being that all countries can come to some universal agreement. The real challenge with the Model United Nations is ensuring that participants represent their allotted country, and it’s interests as accurately as possible.

The day starts at 9am and runs until 3pm with morning tea provided. Countries will present their position at the start of the day before a moderated and unmoderated caucus will occur. A final vote is taken regarding the amended draft resolution to see whether it is passed or not.

For students who are interested in participating, please keep an eye on Compass for any information sessions, otherwise please contact Mr Alex Woolley or Ms Maddison Olsen.

STATE SCHOOLS RELIEF DONATION

On Thursday 16 June Sharon from State Schools’ Relief visited Dromana College to receive our donation to their organisation. In Term 1 the college raised over $1200 via a casual dress day and BBQ with the theme focused on ‘dress as your future career’. The generous spirit in the college was shown through the participation on the day via gold coin donations and many sausages in bread being purchased.

The Dromana College Parents and Friends Association also generously donated over $750 to bring the total to $2000. This money will be used by State Schools’ Relief to help support students in need of uniforms, books, computers and stationary. State Schools’ Relief is busier than ever before and our donation is greatly appreciated and needed. Sharon invited our Student Leaders for a future visit to see how they pack and allocate resources.

Thank you again for the continued support for our Student Leadership fundraisers at Dromana College.

IDAHOBIT DAY 2022

On Tuesday 17 May, Dromana College and the Student Leadership Team recognised IDAHOBIT Day which is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. The pride flag was raised at the front of the college at the start of the day to recognise the importance of this globally acknowledged day.

At lunchtime a number of events in the Performing Arts area were held including live music performances, face painting, badge making, photo booth and information relating to the importance of respect and equality in society. Staff and students were able to interact and celebrate the importance of respect and equality.

It was great to see so many staff and students attending the lunchtime events in support of this important day. The day was led by the Diversity Captains Jay Howard and Zach Millen-Sigley along with Kristie Oates from Wellbeing. They worked hard prior helping to coordinate and organise the activities for the day.

Special thanks also to Jacqui Rodden and the music students who organised and performed a fantastic concert.

The Student Leaders would like to thank everyone who participated and attended on the day.
