Years 3 and 4!

Years 3 and 4

Our Year 3 and 4 students have been enjoying a busy term here at St Anthony's! The children have embraced their learning, as they have delved into a variety of topics across the Curriculum.

Mathematics

In the Area of Measurement, students spent time thinking about the variety of units we might use every day, and how these can differ when trying to measure different things. Students decided, for example, a kilometer is a good unit of measurement for seeing how far a drive home might be, but less useful for measuring the length of a pencil, or even how heavy something is! Students discussed the units that might feature in their every day lives, such as metres, hours, kilograms, and much more. Thinking about time, students also practiced converting between units of measurement. They researched the run time of some of their favourite movies, presenting their findings in both hours and minutes!

English

Following on from our NAPLAN preparations, students reflected on the purpose and design of persuasive texts. They learnt how these type of texts aim to try and change their readers' mind through the use of persuasive language and ideas. Students watched some examples of commercials which aim to be as persuasive as possible to part people with their money! We loved the creativity and flair that was shown as students wrote persuasive pieces of their own.

Integrated Studies

Our Integrated topic for this term is an interesting one, Science! Students have been learning all about two areas, Biological and Chemical Sciences. They understand that there are different states of matter, such as solids and liquids, and that certain materials can change between these states.

Further to this, students have been learning about the science behind living things. They have a strong grasp of the seven factors that dictates whether something is alive, including things such as the ability to grow, move and breathe!

What a better way to consolidate this learning than on our excursion to Myuna Farm, where students got to have a hands on experience with these topics. Not only did students get to pat cute animals (grumpy too if we include the goats), they also completed activities such as going through water in the Wetlands area to find small bugs and fish.

Students had a blast, and were keen to share some of their reflections below! Please also have a look at some of the photos we took on the day, as well as our special video slideshow! We could not have taken part in this excursion without our parent volunteers who offered to attend as well, so we thank them so much!

'I enjoyed the animals and the train ride! I learnt that Flying Foxes are nocturnal.' Charlie D

'I loved going to Myuna farm and it was so fun. I loved seeing all the animals especially the bunnies, horses and the baby goats!' Primrose

'On Monday we went on an excursion to Myuna Farm. My most favourite thing was the nursery because in the future I would like to be a vet and help animals,  but first I need to learn about them, so this was a great chance.' Lilia

'On Monday the 23rd May, 2022 the Year 3 and 4s went to Myuna Farm. I had so much fun touching all of the animals and the fish. I’d love to go back with my parents during the holidays.' Lion

'On Monday the 23rd of May, the 3/4s went to Myuna farm to focus on living things and non living things. We got to see lots of animals and we also saw lots of people walking around.' Emery

'We saw bunnies, guinea pigs, goats, baby goats and one brown goat. While we were there we had a surprise visit from ... a turkey, which is quite scary in real life.  Next we went on a little train over to the wetlands. There we went netting to try and find different invertebrates.' Sienna

'On Monday, the 3/4s went on an excursion to Myuna farm. It looked super cool. There were some chickens, ducks and ducklings roaming around. I thought I was going to have the best day ever!' Neorah
