Years 5/6

Students have been learning how to make their writing more interesting. Some ways we have looked at include; adding more adjectives and using figurative language.

Figurative language is fun and can be quite cryptic because often what it reads, isn't what it means. Students have been using onomatopoeia (words for sounds) and learning what idioms mean (phrases that certainly do not mean their literal meaning).

Here is some of the students learning and work to enjoy.

Trudging through the jungle trying to find rare species of animals, I had take shelter because it was raining cats and dogs! Drip. Drop. Splish. Splash.

"Roar!" growled the rare White Tiger. I had to strike while the iron was hot, so I took a quick photo, click, click. After that I threw in the towel on finding more rare animals and returned to camp. Noah Weilbaecher

Our favourite idioms and their meaning:

It's raining cats and dogs - it is heavily raining.  Addison Nettleton

Give it a shot - have a go at it. Talia Price

Hitting two birds with stone -  doing two things at once. Eva Northam

They hit the deck -  they fell over, hard. Darcy Shipcott

That's a piece of cake - something is very simple. Hughie Price

Bob's your uncle - as simple as that. Justin Coates
