Exams

Term 2 is racing along and semester 1, 2022 is finishing in a matter of weeks.  In the senior school, students have set goals for the term and are working hard.  On Friday the 20th of May there was respite for some as they competed in VCE AFL, badminton and netball. The Year 12s are also planning their formal and hosting some fundraising activities each week.  The VCE staff are busily planning the mid-year exam timetable for Year 10 – 12 students during June 2nd – 9th.  The students will practise completing a formal exam period assessing their understanding of all topics covered this year.

Survey

The Student Attitude to School Survey (SASS) is an annual opportunity for students to provide some general feedback on the overall program that is offered at Auburn High School.  Auburn High students have been completing this over the last fortnight.  For the first time in three years this data will relate to a full on-campus schooling experience.  All students from all government schools complete the survey.  Our data is used to develop new programs, improve current programs and assist with short, medium- and long-term planning.  I commend the students on their provision of honest and genuine feedback.  Staff and the School Council are informed on the results and time is spent analysing the data for patterns.  In a future newsletter we will publish the most significant data points.

Hawthorn Rotary Club

The School’s partnership with Hawthorn Rotary Club provides many opportunities for students to attend Rotary-funded science and cultural events.  Next week two students, Aadi S and Olivia P, are speaking at a luncheon about their experiences at the Santos Experience Melbourne University program in April.  Both students were amazed at the program and enjoyed meeting likeminded students from across the state.  In other news, Sophie N and Ruby R will represent the Rotary Club and Auburn High School at the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA).  This is a very exciting event that challenges all participants’ knowledge, collaboration skills, public speaking ability and critical thinking.  We look forward to hearing from the girls following the event.

Finally, I would like to share the extraordinary effort of a friend of my family, Gabby Kanizay. This week Gabby, 19 years old, reached the summit of Mt Everest to become the youngest Australian woman to reach the ‘top of the world’.  This effort is the result of believing in a dream that she has had since she was 14 years old.  Gabby and her mother mapped out a plan of skill development, expeditions and fitness and health and to their credit they both stuck to the plan throughout COVID-19 pandemic and stood together on Everest.  It is truly humbling to know Gabby and how hard she has worked for this achievement.  She intends to continue, climbing the other 13 peaks over 8000m. Please take a moment to read part of her story HERE.
