Deputy Principal's report

The fundamental purpose of a school’s existence is to attain the highest education of each and every one of its students. The student is and must be the centre of all decisions, actions and the programs of learning, activity and engagement. To ensure students succeed and grow in the school environment, quality instruction needs to be directly led by quality teachers. Programs, such as the Oakleigh Grammar Quartet, the IB MYP and the VCE give the quality frameworks by which the clear instructional models and methodologies can and are used to lead learning for achievement and growth.

With the student purposely at the centre of all our Oakleigh Grammar Teaching and Learning Model, the focus of each teacher is to ensure there is measurable impact with students reaching their highest learning outcomes and goals.

What is often assumed, and not expressed enough, is the fundamental role parents play in this relationship to their child and the learning process. The fundamental difference parents make in student achievement cannot be overstated.

Parents as learning partners encompass student learning and development at home, at school and in communities. Parents naturally provide learning opportunities at home creating connections between the learning at school and learning outside of school. When schools and families work together, students can become more engaged with their school work, achieve better academically and develop better social skills. Effective partnerships enrich wellbeing, achievement and engagement by focusing on student needs.

Communication and the three-way partnership between the student, the parents and the school are crucial for in the education and learning process. Be it pen and paper or email and phone the open dialogue and transparency of communication about what is happening at the school, and in the home is key to strengthening the three-way relationship and the capacity to respond to the shifts in achievement, growth and wellbeing of every student. Whilst teachers and educators play a huge role in the social and academic development of children, studies have overwhelmingly shown the role and importance of parental involvement in education is, not just at the at school, but especially in the home. What happens in the home, with parental connections is a powerful influence on student outcome and achievement. Parents want what’s best for their children, and by getting more involved in our student’s education, parents can directly impact their child’s success in school and beyond.

At Oakleigh Grammar, with each student at the centre of what we do, the role of parents in the three-way learning relationship is crucial and welcomed for the growth and achievement of our wonderful students.

Please note a number of important operational matters.

Student Absentee Line

When your child is going to be absent, parents and guardians are requested, in the first instance, to email the absent line email or call the absent line phone number.

               8554 0050

               absentline@oakleighgrammar.vic.edu.au

Whilst some parents may wish to inform their child’s home group teacher, to support greater efficiency, we request that you register your child’s absence via one of the options listed above.

Students Leaving Early

If a student needs to leave school early, only students in Years 10-12 may leave without a parent or guardian being physically sighted at reception. From a child-safety perspective, we are unable to let Junior School or Middle School students leave without a parent coming to the reception.

Thank you in anticipation for your support.
