It is with much pleasure that Oakleigh Grammar announces the launch of SchoolTV, a fantastic toolkit for Oakleigh Grammar parents. SchoolTV has been supporting families and schools for several years by providing parenting guidance and information to help alleviate some of the concerns faced by our children, and us as parents. Parenting can be challenging at times, and the short videos, special reports and other tools now available to you through SchoolTV offer an information-rich resource.

Access to SchoolTV is via our school website. Go to the homepage and click the ‘Parents’ Tab at the top of the page, then click ‘SchoolTV’. On the SchoolTV home page, you will notice a short video titled, “ Introducing SchoolTV, A wellbeing resource for schools.” This video explains what SchoolTV provides and how to navigate through the topics, videos and articles, so it is worth watching.

You will notice a section called ‘Library Archive.’ Here you will find ‘Series’ and ‘Special Reports’ which contain information on various topics. Click on one of the Topic headings eg ‘Understanding Adolescence’ and it will take you to a series of short videos hosted by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. Alternatively, you can click on ‘All Editions’ in the taskbar and it will drop down all topics. Click on ‘Special Reports’ for articles related to popular and current issues.

It is my sincere hope that you find value in this incredible resource that Oakleigh Grammar has invested in. I have included topics that align with school values however, I have not been able to review everything, as there are 100s of hours of videos and articles to review. Please contact me if there are any articles, or videos you find concerning. Similarly, if there is a topic you would like included, let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your request.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me using the link on the website under my name, or at counsellor@oakleighgrammar.vic.edu.au and I will reply as soon as I am able.

I hope you find this useful in navigating the complex task of parenting!

VCE and Careers Expo Excursion 2022

The entire senior school cohort attended an excursion to the VCE and Careers Expo on Thursday 28 April. The sunshine was upon us as we headed to the expo, held at Caulfield Racecourse. The expo provided students with opportunities to collect course information and speak with Victorian, Interstate and International representatives from Universities, TAFES, and Private colleges.

Employers and volunteer organisations were also in attendance to offer students advice.

Employers included Victoria Police, Defence Force Recruiting, and Ambulance Victoria just to name a few!

Students also attended VCE Study Seminars, which provided them with excellent study advice and strategies for VCE success across all their subjects.

As Careers Advisor, the highlight was after the expo, back at school, where students were raring to discuss with me the new course and career pathways they discovered when speaking with expo exhibitors. Success is ours to achieve, and I look forward to continuing to guide our students as they work towards the success of an exciting career development journey.

YEAR 12 CORNER

VCE Careers Expo

On 28 April 2022 Years 10, 11 and 12 Oakleigh Grammar students attended the VCE careers expo at Caulfield Racecourse. We were able to mingle and obtain an understanding of all the universities across Australia that we may wish to apply to, for those who wish to proceed to tertiary studies. There were multiple VCE study seminars which we were also able to attend during our few hours at the Caulfield racecourse centre. Many of us were able to ask lots of questions to the representatives sent from universities and TAFES across Victoria but also interstate. Fundamentally, it was an amazing day full of new opportunities for our future.

The careers expo was a great experience we got to explore possible career paths and opportunities. We were able to speak to many different universities who told us about their courses allowing us to refine our decision on which university we want to go to before the end of the year! We finished off the day by eating some food from the canteen.

GALA Sports Day

On 3 May 2022, we had a Gala Day for sports as we couldn’t have our usual Greek games tournaments this year. St Johns School attended and we played table tennis, netball and soccer. All players played well and we are very proud of our year twelve cohort. Congratulations to the table tennis and netball team who won but unfortunately our soccer lost by 3-2. However, it was a gallant performance by our players.

Darren Pereira Guest Speaker

On Tuesday 10 May we had a guest speaker Daniel Pereira. He gave us some tips on how to get through year 12 by using study techniques and making goals for our study scores and ATAR’s. This was really beneficial as it allowed us to visualise what we want for our future and put it into perspective as it’s only a couple of months away!!!

As Darren said “If you believe it, it’s possible” and “I can is I will and I can’t is I won’t”

Studies have shown that students can learn a second language better if the learning atmosphere is fun and relaxed. At Oakleigh Grammar, we aim to create interactive and positive learning experiences for language students.

We have incorporated technology into our language classroom by using Education Perfect, and online games such as Kahoot, Blooket and Wordwall. According to students’ feedback, these games are effective and fun ways for them to revise vocabulary and use the target language. They also love participating in role-plays, interviews, presentations, learning stations, picture walks, Charades and Flashcards activities.

We are so pleased to see how passionate our language learners are. By speaking a second language, they can gain new perspectives and connect with more people, while appreciating their own traditions and values. We are hopeful that these global citizens will shape the world to become a more diverse, open-minded, compassionate, and peaceful place.
