Benvenuto - Welcome

Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week

Last Thursday and Friday we had some incredible experiences to commemorate National Sorry Day and the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. At St Anne’s College, the local Indigenous story is embedded in our building and in our community as an important part of our identity. This story is a story of continuous care for the land on which our college is built; it is a story of resilience, respect and belonging. National Reconciliation Week is a real opportunity to put a spotlight on the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal people, exploring the concept of reconciliation and how we can contribute to achieving this in Australia. Thank you to our Koorie Education Worker, Tina Thompson, and all of the special guests who help make these days meaningful and successful. For coverage of the Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week events held at the college, please see the Learning Updates pages in this edition of il giornale.

Swimming

This week, our School of Wonder children participated in their annual learn-to-swim program. Swimming and water safety is included in the Health and Physical Education Curriculum from Foundation to Level 10. This means that schools must ensure that they are implementing a swimming and water safety program that meets the requirements of the curriculum. The Health and Physical Education curriculum includes four focus areas with specific reference to swimming and water safety which schools are required to teach.

  •  Fundamental movement skills (FMS) = Develop foundation movement and skills to enable students to participate in a range of physical activities. E.g. Floating and moving the body through water.
  • Safety (S) = Practise behaviours and skills to keep themselves and others safe in and around water. E.g. Sun safety, use of protective equipment and first aid.
  • Lifelong physical activities (LPA) = Understand that swimming can enhance lifelong health-related fitness and wellbeing.
  • Challenge and adventure activities (CA) = Participate in challenging swimming activities in a range of contexts. E.g. Triathlon, diving, water polo.

Development of knowledge and skills relating to survival swimming and basic water safety can significantly reduce a child’s drowning risk and enhance community safety. (Victorian Curriculum)

Laudato Si' Launch

On Monday, May 23, a group of students and staff went to the launch of the Sandhurst Laudato Si’ Action Plan and celebration of Catholic Earthcare’s 20th Anniversary at St Mary of the Angels College, Nathalia. The celebration launched a commitment from Catholic Education Sandhurst Ltd and schools across the diocese, including St Anne’s College, to work towards the 7 Laudato Si’ Goals in the next 7 years: 1. Response to the Cry of the Earth 2. Response to the Cry of the Poor 3. Ecological Economics 4. Adoption of Simple Lifestyles 5. Ecological Education 6. Ecological Spirituality 7. Community Resilience and Empowerment.

We look forward to sharing more information about this important commitment.**Laudato Si’ is the Encyclical Letter written by Pope Francis on care for our common home in 2015. Laudato Si - Encyclical Letter from Pope Francis
