Homework

As we come to the end of Week 3 students will now be familiar with the homework requirements introduced to them and communicated with parents and guardians at the end of last Term. Completing homework is not a new expectation of our students and recommended timeframes have previously existed in the College diary. However, as we move toward senior secondary it is important we equip students with good homework and study habits.

As we move toward the below expectations Teachers are now incorporating homework into their fortnightly lesson planning. This is viewable to students and parents as a Classwork Task on SIMON.

  • This is currently a small task to help your son adapt and develop routine study habits at home
  • Teachers are working with your son to provide strategies around developing good study habits at home
  • By the end of the year your son will be receiving regular homework for completion

Parents and guardians will play an important role at home supporting students to develop a routine. Some helpful strategies include:

  • Creating a designated, quiet study space
  • Being consistent from day to day – schedule study for a set time each day
  • Schedule enough time to complete Tasks without rushing
  • Steer clear of proximity to electronics and distractions to aid focus
  • Schedule breaks

If your son struggles with developing and implementing these skills and routines at first, Homework Club takes place every Thursday afternoon in the JPC Foyer which will be a supportive first step.

Think U Know

This Term Year 7 and 8 students have been completing a short course in our Welfare sessions aimed at educating them around Social Media and Cyberbullying. As we live in a technologically connected world, young people are communicating in new, different and evolving ways online. It is important they know how to keep themselves safe online but also how to interact and communicate appropriately online.

Yesterday they participated in a Think U Know Presentation led by Tasmania Police. The aim of the presentation was to provide students with the tools to create a safer online environment and covers what young people SAYSEE and DO online.

The presentation covered topics such as social media reputation management, cyberbullying, ‘sexting’, ‘sextortion’, online grooming, online gaming, inappropriate content, privacy management, identity theft, how to protect your devices, and how to report matters when things go wrong. This was a good reminder to students about the dangers that exist online as well as their responsibilities when online.

If you become aware of online harm please report it to the eSafety Commissioner: https://www.esafety.gov.au/report
