A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34

On Tuesday we celebrated Student Mass, the Fifth Sunday of Easter, with the boys from Pastoral Care group Joyce 1. The Gospel Acclamation reminded us of Jesus’ commandment to Love and is a timely reminder for all of us during Term II, our time in the year when we focus on our brothers and sisters at the Mary Rice Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.

Jesus gave this commandment to a small group of his friends as he washed their feet before supper, a significant action of humility and service which traditionally would have been performed by a ‘lowly servant’. Jesus explained to them that by being willing to serve in humility, so we too should serve in humility if we truly follow his new commandment, setting His own love as the standard to which all believers should aspire.

Next Friday at our first Prefect’s Assembly for this term we will officially launch our Mary Rice Centre campaign, celebrating our unique and long-term relationship with the staff and students of the Mary Rice Centre in Nairobi Kenya. Our friendship is founded upon Jesus’ commandment of Loving as we are Loved and has been strengthened by the humility and humbleness we have learnt from and with which we have in turn served our friends in Kibera over many years.

The student leaders from Years 8-10 will be busy promoting this theme amongst their Houses, and there will be plenty of opportunities for them to help raise awareness and funds for the specially-abled children from Kibera and Lang’ata.
