In Year 2 Science we have been talking about light. How materials are transparent, translucent or opaque and how light can be reflected and refracted. A student asked a great question: ‘Why can’t we see through clouds?’ To try to explain this we made a model of a cloud by using eye droppers and water and put hundreds of tiny water droplets onto a plastic tray. When light hits the droplets it is reflected away in many directions, making clouds look white. Some light is refracted (or bent by the water) and split into all the colours of the rainbow. We are now looking at bubbles and how they also refract light to show colours on their surface.
