LITERACY - Di Manthos

About National Simultaneous Storytime

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. 2021 will be the 21st year of the campaign. It is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. Thank you to all of the supporters of National Simultaneous Storytime 2021 Australian Space Agency, the Office of the Chief Scientist, Science Time From Space, author Philip Bunting, Scholastic Australia, the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa; and our official supporter CleverPatch.

The book, Give me some space! written and illustrated by Philip Bunting and published by Scholastic Australia, will be read by an astronaut from the International Space Station on Wednesday 19 May 2021 at 11:00am (AEST).

STEM - Joe Frazzetto

Scienceworks are working on a new exhibition for students on the topic of light and optics. Last Friday, two Scienceworks Exhibition Experience Developers interviewed  five students from St Fidelis via ZOOM Meet to ascertain their understanding on the topic of light. The Students who participated were Louis Pirruccio (1/2MD), Madalen Silvestro (1/2SC), Zac Borg (3/4MM), Ava Brazel (5/6OS) and Lachlan Ross (5/6VC). The kinds of questions they might ask are:

  • What does light mean to you?
  • What do you already know about the science of light?
  • What do you think would be fun to do in an exhibition about light?
  • What's exciting about light, colour and how we see?
  • What do you want to know more about?
  • If you have ever been to Scienceworks before, what do you like about it?

Scienceworks’ Exhibition Experience Developers were very impressed with their responses. It was great to see the students thinking, collaborating and communicating their ideas to Scienceworks. The Scienceworks staff were so impressed, the five students each received a free pass voucher to Scienceworks. The students were very thankful and excited.

STEM- The Bionic LEGO Hand

In STEM for the last 4 weeks, Mr Frazzetto told us about one in 10,000 children are born without a hand and Mr MacGregor’s nephew Zac Franklin who was born without a hand. Our STEM Challenge was to explore, design and construct a prosthetic hand made of LEGO, we had to test them to see what things they can pick up. By Luca Tsangaris (5/6CF)

In STEM, we're making prosthetic hands for Mr. MacGregor's nephew, Zac. We have to work in groups of 3 to design and make a prosthetic hand using the LEGO Spike Kit and code it to move and grab objects. By Sonya Mazzarella (5/6)

In STEM we are making prosthetic hands. We are designing for Zac Franklin, Mr Mac’s nephew. He was born without a fully formed hand. We are making the prosthetic hands out of LEGO Spike. Making different prototypes is hard but I enjoy using the LEGO and trying new things. By Christian La Porta (5/6CF)

Last term, all students from Foundation to Year 6 were asked to design and produce a colourful poster promoting ‘Say No To Bullying & Say Yes to Respectful Relationships’. The students had to draw their understanding of Respectful Relationships.  The students did an amazing job on their poster designs. Last week I received some good news. The Interrelate ‘2021 Say No to Bullying’ Poster Competition contacted me announcing that three students from St Fidelis have made the FINALISTS list. This is a great achievement from our artistic students.

We congratulate all these students  and wish them the best.

NUMERACY - Colleen Monaghan

Thanks you to all our wonderful parents who found time to attend our Parent Helper workshops this week. When I see the number of parents turning up to our sessions, it does reinforce just how lucky we are to be part of such a warm, supportive community.

Here are a few snapshots of our session:

Maths Olympiad

Our Maths Olympiad students sat their second Olympiad event this week. Again the students did our school proud. They showed persistence even when the questions got tough. Congratulations to Nicholas Cicero and Lachlan Ross for achieving the highest score for our school this Olympiad.

Our Foundation Students

This week the Foundation students made chains that  were long and chains that  were short.

In the junior grades this week we investigated 3D shapes. Here are some of the students making various 3D shapes.
