Spotlight on Maths

Hi Everyone,

The term is flying as we are already at the end of Week 3!

I thought that I would focus on Mathematics and share some useful insights in relation to how you can help your child.

Parental Attitudes & Beliefs Research findings:

There are direct links between parents’ attitudes, beliefs and perceptions about Mathematics and their children’s attitudes and performance in Mathematics

Results from a study by Cai (2003) indicated that parental involvement is a statistically significant predictor of their children's mathematical achievement and also promoted positive behaviours and emotional development.

Please also see this great article from Professor Jo Boaler with some advice for parents and carers:

What you can do at home:

  • Be positive and talk about the way that you use mathematics every day.
  • Let your child know that you think mathematics is important
  • Point out the ways in which different family members use mathematics in their jobs and at home
  • Use mathematical decision-making opportunities in everyday life, such as when on a car trip, calculating how much petrol is needed, estimating travel times and interpreting maps
  • When shopping, calculate the final price of discounted items, such as a CD that is $30 full price being discounted by 25%

Good luck to your football team on the weekend and please don't ask David about the football, he's starting to get carried away.....

With Kind Regards,

Cam
