Deputy Principal - Teaching and Learning

Dr Janine Biggin

The term is moving along quite quickly.  I take this opportunity to provide some updates including outlining NAPLAN and upcoming semester 1 examinations.

NAPLAN

The College is continuing in 2021 to provide these assessments online.  These will get underway on Tuesday May 11, with the St Mary’s students beginning the paper tests on that day.  For St John’s Year 7 and Year 9 students, the schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, May 12 (Reading, Writing)

Thursday, May 13 (Conventions of Language, Numeracy).

The NAPLAN data does provide useful feedback to the College about the performance of students on the core elements of Literacy and Numeracy and therefore we request all students to attend these scheduled assessments.

EXAMINATIONS

Examinations at each year level provide important preparation for students, enabling them to build the skills required to perform well in timed assessments.  All students from years 7-11 will have Semester 1 examinations.

Year 8 and 9 will have examinations of Thursday 3 and Friday 4 June.

Year 7 will have one day of examinations on Friday 4 June.

Year 11 will have examinations running from Friday 4 June to Friday 11 June.

Year 10 students will have examinations from Monday 6 June to Friday 11 June.

Year 10 and 11 students will only be required to be at school for their scheduled examinations during the Semester 1 examination period.

All Year 12 VCE students and all Year 11 VCE students doing a Year 12 subject will undertake the GAT on Wednesday 9 June.  There will be no Year 11 or 12 classes on this day.

SEQTA

It is timely to provide a reminder of the importance of SEQTA Engage for our communication between school and home.  All student academic results are provided to both students and parents, through the Engage platform, either the website interface, or the APP.  Engage provides parents with very easy access to all student results on learning program assessment tasks.

Parents can access the results of set academic tasks, and classroom teachers may provide grades or written feedback to families.  Most teachers are also communicating through SEQTA Direct messages.  Teachers are asked to ensure parents are aware of how their child is progressing in each subject throughout the whole semester.  It is therefore crucial that SEQTA is regularly viewed by parents.  Both interim and semester reports are also released through SEQTA Engage as well.

If you have any difficulty with accessing SEQTA, please make contact with reception at the College and we will provide you with support to ensure that you able to regularly receive communication about student learning.
