ZOO SNOOZE

The Zoo Snooze is St James’s first school camp which is in Grade Three. It is only one night but it feels like a week.

When we arrived there we played a few games and got our bags. We were also given bandanas and put in teams.

Next we did the night walk.  Aimee and Kathrine, who were our leaders, showed us the zoo at night time and we got to see all the nocturnal animals and some animals who were sleeping like the primates.

I slept in a tent where all the elephants used to live with the siennas and keeley. When we finally fell asleep the birds woke us up. Which was really annoying. When we left our tents, we had breakfast that was really yummy.

After all that, we had to pack up and the ute took all our stuff. But we still got to go around the zoo in the daytime.

We were all really sad to go.

Zoo Snooze was amazing .

There were so many cool animals and we even went on a night walk.

When we got off the bus, we took our bags to the old elephant enclosure. That is where we stayed for the night. We did survivor tasks and there were 4 teams: Frogs, Mice, Parrots and Tasmanian Devils. I was a part of the Tasmanian Devils. The Tasmanian Devils got dinner first.

After dinner we went on a night walk. Firstly we saw the tiger. Then we saw the elephants, stick insect, tortoise and snake. We heard the lion but we didn’t see it.

After the night walk we went to bed.   Mr. Flannagan let us stay up late.

It was a long ride on the bus back to school. Some of us slept on the bus because we were so tired.

Bike Camp Maldon

Bike camp was a blast, we had the best time ever. It started with getting on the bus. The bus was packed with excitement we could not wait to get there. It took two hours to get there, we finally made it to bike camp. When we got there we were so excited , we unpacked our stuff from the bus and listened to what cabbin we were in. There were 4 bunk beds in one and 6 bunk beds in the other. There was a cabin for all the boys.

Our first bike ride was to the BMX track and after a quick and easy ride there, we arrived. Once we got there we raced to go first then lined up, the bmx track had a heap of bumps, tight turns and spins. We did it so many times, than had a bite to eat and a sip of water.

Dinner was a disaster with people eating like a pack of wolves scoffing every last strand of spaghetti . With food spilt all over the floor it was not a great start to the camp. The chatter in the dining hall grew and grew until it felt like we were all yelling at the top of our lungs. I’m glad I didn’t have to clean up the mess we made.

The next day we got to the humongous hill we expected it to be all downhill but no, it was just flat. Are legs were exhausted and we couldn't go on. But finally we got to the miniature lake. The lake water was not clear so we couldn’t see any yabbies. I decided to make a bet with the policemen Rick. If anyone caught a yabbie bigger than my head I would get to push Rick in the lake, but if the class didn’t catch a yabbie at all (or not bigger than my head), I would get pushed in the lake!

We waited a long time but I didn’t even get a nibble. Then finally we heard screams. Venetia had caught a yabbie. But it was only the size of my eye. Then we heard more screams and then Ella had caught a giant yabby. It was just a little bit smaller than my head, than Leni caught a yabbie smaller than Venetia. When it was the end thank god I didn’t get pushed in!

The second ride we went on was to yabbying and back after yabbying we got to a BIG BIG hill! After that we expected that it would be all downhill but once we got up to the top of the hill we noticed that there was a slight tilt to the ground we struggled to finish the 14km ride but eventually we all made it.

The next day we did the activity rotations we did rock climbing bubble soccer and we went to a lolly shop. There were four rock climbing walls  they were about 10 meters tall but when you got to the top it felt like it was fifty meters tall. Then we did bubble soccer. You couldn’t really see inside the bubble but you could still see where you were going. We kept on banging into each other and knocking each other over and we kept on rolling down the hill. Then we went to the lolly shop it was like an old room full of wonderful different brightly colored lollies. All the lolly were crazy cheap.

The last thing we did was ride to the Carman's Tunnel it was really fun we went deep down to the mine and learnt about a ghost called Light Finger Jack who stole money in the night. The man blew out all the candles then turned out his light, we all screamed  as other members of Year 4 tapped people on the shoulder. After a really fun day we rode home.

Year 1 Adventure to Legoland!

For our Connected Learning unit on Creativity, the Year 1 students went to Legoland Discovery Centre.

We had a fantastic day constructing spinning tops, testing out our Lego cars, creating under the sea designs and building towers using giant Lego blocks.

A highlight was also going on the rides and watching a Lego movie in the 4D cinema where we were sprayed with water!

It was a day filled with lots of creativity, problem solving and collaborative play.

Year 2 and Foundation Visit Legoland

On Thursday 31st October, 48 children from Year 2 and Foundation  boarded the bus to Legoland.

The children were so excited about visiting Chadstone on Halloween and using their creative minds to create with Lego bricks.

After the bus dropped us off and we ate our snack, the children and incredible parent helpers moved to our 11am workshop on 'Spinning Tops'.  Children had to create a Lego spinner and a Lego spinning top. They then predicted and tested their spinning top to see which side of the top spun the most. The workshop was over quickly  and we then explored Legoland. Children worked in pairs to build a car and test to see how fast it could go. Children created scenes, built robots and used their creative minds. We then went on the rides which were lots of fun.

We thank our parent helpers who came along with us to Legoland,

Sharon, Mel, Penny, Sally, Paula and Kym.

We couldn't have gone without you! Thanks so much.

Well done Year 2 and Foundation.

We Love Working Together

-Year 2 and Foundation

On Friday the Year 2 children and Foundation worked together to design and create a Lego house. The session was a STEM /Literacy activity based on the Three Little Pigs.

The children had to design, create and test a house made of Lego.

This Lego house had to be strong enough to withstand a wolf huffing and puffing. The house had to hold no more than four glue sticks(pigs) and the house had to have a chimney large enough to fit another glue stick (the wolf).

The task took time. Houses fell, houses were tested, modified and problems overcome.

The session also developed resilience, persistence, creativity, collaboration and strengthened the friendship between both classes.

It was wonderful to see the children in both classes working so well together. Great Job!

YEAR 5

SUPERSPEAK

Last Friday, the Year 5s completed their 'Superspeak' public speaking course by hosting a parent session where they exhibited their newly developed skills.

The course ran over 6 one hour sessions and saw students learning about gesturing and expressive skills, persuasive speaking and speech structuring.

Students in both 5C and 5M were challenged to create an oral presentation, ranging from a short 60 second persuasive speech, an entertaining story, an impromptu speech or a fully structured 3min persuasive speech.

All students should be proud of their final pieces and the way they challenged themselves in terms of utilising a range of public speaking skills and techniques.

A huge thankyou to all parents, special friends and grandparents who attended the sessions, and an extra big thankyou to the students who really extended themselves in an area that can be a real a challenge.

Our facilitator, Lou, who requested to work with our school, said our students were a pleasure to work with and were "undeniably talented".
