Assistant Principal's Report

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12
It is imperative that students in Years 10, 11 and 12 access students online through the NESA site. https://studentsonline.nesa.nsw.edu.au/
This site will enable students to check their subjects and personal details.
Students will need to know their student number which will be on their confirmation of entry form. Students will then receive a confirmation report. Students can also gain access to their student number if they contact Mrs Burton in the front office.
Once on the site just login and create a PIN for future logins. All students need to keep their student number and PIN number in a reliable location. This is where they can access credentials including the RoSA and HSC.
As a school, we are responsible for notifying NESA of any student who leaves school prior to obtaining the HSC. We do not have access to their RoSA.
Once we notify NESA the RoSA can only be accessed via students online. If details change such as your address you can also notify NESA directly through this portal. You also need to be able to change your email address once you leave school.
Mobile Phones and Learning devices
At O’Çonnor we encourage and support the responsible use of technology. Knowledge is available to all students with just a few clicks and learning is enhanced by technology.
However, devices and phones can become a distraction for many students. Whilst we do our best to filter out sites such as snap chat, gaming apps do regularly appear. I would encourage all parents to monitor their son's/ daughter's devices.
If you need to contact your son or daughter we need this to happen during Break A and B or before and after school. If they are in class we would like you to contact the front office rather than interrupt their learning.
Our policy is that students in 7-10 should not have their phone out during class unless they have the explicit permission from their teacher.
Students are not permitted to photograph another student and distribute a photo without the direct permission of the person being photographed. This means all recordings. Students who choose to do so may be at risk of serious consequences including school suspension. If a student is found to be using their phone when in class they will be asked to put it away and if they continue then it will be taken from them and logged in the phone register. Students will have the phone returned at the end of the day. A second infringement will see the phone retained by the school for a week. I don’t know of any student who would want this to happen. The same goes for all devices such as a chromebook or i-pad.
I would urge you to have a conversation with your son or daughter about the need to be responsible with their devices and to use them at the appropriate time.
Year 11 Information Evening
On Monday February 26 commencing at 6:00pm we will hold the Year 11 information evening. During the evening we will be explaining the rules and regulations around the successful completion of Year 11. We will also be introducing the mandatory assessment program for all subjects and provide an explanation of the grading procedure at the completion of Year 11, which is at the end of term 3.
The HSC program will begin at the start of term 4. We will also be introducing the Pastoral Academic Care (PAC) team and Leaders of Learning. This enables parents to take advantage of the time to introduce yourself or to ask any specific questions relating to your child’s learning.
HSC Analysis and workshops
Over the last two weeks HSC teachers from 2017 and Leaders of Learning have met with system coaches from the Catholic Schools office to analyse the results from the 2017 HSC.
This enabled us to have a critical reflection on the results, as well as to put a face on the data. We also analyse the results package made available through NESA, in order to drill down into where students performed strongly and in what questions they didn’t do so well.
Scope and Sequences
With our move to greater formative assessment of student performance we will provide on our web site, under Curriculum, the scope and sequence for each course from 7-11.
Formative assessment implies that assessment is being carried out continually in order to move learning forward.
Students particularly in years 7-9 will not have major tasks or a high number of summative or end on tasks, such as tests or examinations.
We believe it is better to provide parents with an indication of the topics and content that students will be studying throughout the year. This is contained in the Scope and Sequence. Over the next week, we will place these documents onto the web site.
