Chaplain's Chat

This week
This week we’ll look at a couple of healthy lunch ideas that your kids can take to school. Yesterday I overheard a student talk about her yummy savoury muffins. Other students bring in a ham and cheese sandwich (maybe with a dab of chutney or relish), or a salad sandwich, using grainy or wholemeal bread. With the colder weather now upon us, my sons will sometimes take a Thermos flask with soup or noodles, or leftovers from dinner. Other students bring in some cold chicken to nibble on, with some cut up veggies (carrots, celery). Maybe a side salad? Or a wrap with home-made dip?
Of course, finding healthy recipe options is not the problem – it’s getting our kids to eat them!! There are a number of websites that provide simple recipes. One I’ve come across is taste.com.au, where there is a chicken sausage roll recipe (Yum!). You won't feel guilty eating these yummy, healthier sausage rolls.
Another website http://www.kidspot.com.au/kitchen/galleries/lunch-box-ideas/10-days-of-lunch-box-loving-recipes?image=5 has a few good recipes too – cheese and vegemite scrolls, mini quiches and sandwich kebabs! Sometimes just popping something a little bit different in our kid’s lunchbox could make their day!
Remember, try and avoid chocolate, biscuits, lots of wrapped, sugary options. They are quick and easy, and OK as a treat, but not great if they are regularly in a lunchbox. Pop in a piece of fruit, or chopped carrot sticks, dried fruit or plain popcorn.
And always the bottle of water!
As you wait to pick up your child after school this week, ask some other parents what they do! It’s great to share ideas!
