Children learn significance of Ash Wednesday

Parents and children responded quickly and very well to the transition to distance learning during the snap lockdown announced last Friday, and the return to onsite learning ran smoothly this week. During this time, the significance of Ash Wednesday was brought to children’s awareness. The prayer cloth was changed from the green of Ordinary time, to the purple of Lent. Discussion with Foundation took place around Lent being a time where we make an extra effort to be the best we can for others. Children reflected on this and identified specific things they could do during this time.

The Year 1/2 writing program focused on seeing the world through writers' eyes and capturing ideas in their world to inspire writing. The documentation of this varied; some children drew, some listed words, others wrote in full sentences but what was important was the concept that finding the idea is the writer’s number one job.

It is hard to believe we are moving into week five, but observing children engaging in learning, it’s easy to see the growth that has taken place in the last four weeks. We regularly refer to learning assets and I certainly have witnessed children sharing, controlling impulsivity, contributing, reflecting and researching, along with many other aspects related to learning assets. Learning Mentors continue to tune children into our Inquiry concept - function, and how systems and cooperation can create a balanced community. As Learning Mentors do this, children are participating in learning experiences using a variety of materials and working systematically within our school community, developing an awareness of systems and our interconnectedness.

Foundation literacy interview booking reminder

Parents of Foundation children who haven't already done so are asked to book a literacy interview for their child on the following Foundation rest days: Wednesday, February 24, or Wednesday, March 3. The half-hour interviews are an important assessment tool for Learning Mentors. The interviews are conducted one-on-one between the Learning Mentor and child. Parents are welcome to stay at the college while the interview is being conducted, or they can leave their child with the Learning Mentor for the half hour. Please book via PAM.

Ally-oop! There's been a lot of bouncing, passing and shooting action at the new basketball net for the School of Wonder children. They are having hoops of fun honing their skills in the new Stage 2A yard.
