Careers News

We are well into term three now, and it’s been an incredibly busy careers office with subject selections, VTAC applications and students researching and planning for 2020 and beyond.

Students and their families can make appointments to see me to discuss issues with course selection or tertiary applications this term via the Careers page on My Northcote High.  If you make an appointment please ensure you attend, or let me know if you can’t.  A number of students have not attended booked appointments, and this takes away opportunities for others.  Thanks for your understanding.

Remember that in addition to the careers section of the school newsletter there is a weekly careers news update provided via My Northcote High Careers section – Career News.  This is a good time of year to re-familiarise yourself with all the resources available to you on the careers page in My Northcote High.

Year 10 Students

It’s been great to catch up with so many Year 10s to discuss courses and subjects.  This is one of the more challenging transitions during secondary schooling, and it’s been pleasing to see how much research students have been doing.  This will pay off in the long term, and hopefully all students are feeling happy with the selections they submitted this week.

This week a large number of Year 10 students will be participating in the RIJI (Real Industry Job Interview) program at the Fitzroy Town Hall.  These role play interviews with employers from a range of industries provide a terrific opportunity to develop work readiness skills.  Students also have the chance to chat with professionals from industry to gain invaluable knowledge.  I look forward to seeing the students in action on Tuesday.

Year 11 Students

Last week I presented to all Year 11 students on how to approach planning for 2020.  This included a brief overview of the current employment market in Australia, and the skills that employers are looking for from school leavers.  Students are encouraged to think carefully about all the things they are doing to prepare themselves for a successful future.  Students who are struggling to decide on a course for 2019 can make an appointment to see me through the following link: http://calendly.com/burgess-booma/

Year 11 students also enjoyed an afternoon at the Melbourne Careers Expo last Friday.  A number of students have mentioned that they found the trip valuable, and staff were really pleased with the way our students interacted and engaged with exhibitors.

Students who are not planning on studying at Northcote High School in 2020 should make an appointment to see me to discuss their plans through the following link - http://calendly.com/burgess-booma/.

Year 12 Students

Students in Year 12 will start working through the VTAC process this week. All Year 12s will be briefed on the process on Tuesday August 6th.  All students should ensure they attend the briefing, regardless of their plans for 2020.  Following this, students will have the opportunity to use Connect time to ask questions of their tutors and to work on their registration and application.  Tutors will be tracking progress through all the steps, and referring students to Careers as needed.

Our goal is for ALL Year 12 students to complete this process BEFORE THE END OF TERM 3.  This will allow students to fully focus on completion of coursework and exam preparation.

Any student who needs assistance with finalising their application should book a time to see me through the following link - http://calendly.com/burgess-booma/.

There will be a VTAC parent information session held on Thursday August the 8th at the school.  This will cover information on researching, applications, SEAS, scholarships, ATAR release and the offer process.  You can book to attend this session via this link:  https://www.trybooking.com/BEDMH

Year 12 students should be attending Open Days in August and developing their list of potential courses in the booklet they received late last term.  Students should bring this booklet with them if they need to book an appointment to see me.

University of Melbourne Principal’s scholarship!!

NHS is now seeking applicants for this $5000 scholarship.  If you are a high academic achiever, who has made an ongoing contribution to the school or wider community you might wish to apply.  Students who apply should be planning on studying with the University of Melbourne in 2020.  To apply go to: https://tinyurl.com/MelUniNHS2019. We are only able to nominate one applicant for this opportunity, so short-listing and interviews will be conducted to finalise the nomination.
