Book Week in the John Cain Library
Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating Book Week. The CBCA Book of the Year Awards are announced each year on the third Friday in August. Book Week commences the following day.
During the week of August 19-23 the John Cain Library will be celebrating Book Week with a number of activities.
- Monday 19 August – Harry Potter Day – NHS Muggles will make and taste Butter Beer and sample Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans. Test your knowledge on the Harry Potter Quiz for your chance to win a great Harry Potter prize.
- Tuesday 20 August – Join the Book Week Kahoot celebrating the theme of Book Week ‘Reading is My Secret Power’ BYOD
- Wednesday 21 August – Black Out Poetry session. Using pages of an old book, compose poetry by blacking out redundant text. Winners of the ‘6 Word Review’ competition announced and prizes awarded.
- Thursday 22 August – The Great Book Swap – all kinds of books will be available to purchase for a gold coin donation. All funds raised go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Library Student Assistants will be there to help staff and students with their selections.
- Friday 23 August – Make a pendant, keyring or fridge magnet using Shrink Art Plastic. Winners of ‘Guess Who's Reading...’ announced.
Book Week Competition – 6 word reviews!
Can you write a pithy, punchy review of a book you have read in only 6 words? Try your hand at a 6 Word review to win a Book Week prize.
Submit your reviews by email with ‘6 Word Review’ in the subject line to library@nhs.vic.edu.au by 3.11 pm on Friday 16th August. Hard copy entry forms will also be available in the library from Tuesday 6th August. Drop hard copy entries in the box provided in the library by Friday 16th August.
Winners will be displayed and prizes presented in the library on Wednesday 21st August during Book Week activities.

Come in to the library to see if you can guess which teachers are reading these books. The closing date is Thursday 22 August - pick up an entry form in the library.
Great Book Swap – lunchtime Thursday August 22 in the John Cain Library
The Great Book Swap is fast approaching. We are still accepting good quality second hand books for the swap. Please leave donated books with library staff.
On Thursday August 22 at lunchtime books will be made available for purchase for a gold coin donation. Library Student Assistants will be available to help with your selections.
