Industry & Enterprise - White Card

Last week the Year 10 Industry & Enterprise students completed their White Card which is requirement of entering construction sites. They covered how to identify hazards, how to read safety policies and then implement these in the workplace.

Year 11 & 12 Workplace Learning

Workplace Learning

Workplace Learning (WPL) is an integral part of the Year 11/12 General studies.

The General studies students should be exploring opportunities for their next placement. Paperwork will be handed out over the coming weeks. Many employers are already booking students in for Semester 2, so act early to be sure you don’t miss out on your first preference!

During work placement, employers supervise the students as they practice and extend their skills.

Students benefit from Work Placement because they:

  • experience real work situations
  • have access to industry standard facilities, equipment and experienced staff
  • develop self-confidence, skills and understandings that will assist their transition from school to work.
  • gain skills, such as communication, following instructions, workplace safety that can be transferred between workplaces
  • get to ‘try out an industry’ before committing to a specific career or industry
  • improve their employability by gaining industry experience
  • gain contacts within the industry who may help in the future with finding fulltime employment.

Industry & Enterprise - Workplace Learning

During Week 9 the Industry and Enterprise students will be completing their first work placement in a variety of industries. Workplace Learning (WPL) is an integral part of learning as it allows employers to supervise the students as they practice and extend the industry skills they have learnt in the classroom.

We wish them all the best and look forward to visiting them on-site.

Tips for Getting a Traineeship or Apprenticeship

  1. Ask for a work placement while still at school. Schools will cover your insurance whilst on WPL.
  2. Demonstrate what a great employee you are.
  3. Get information from a Jobs and Skills Centre or Apprentice Support Service on what subsidies employers can get.
  4. Tell the potential employer what subsidies they can get and ask if they will take you on.
  5. If they won’t take you on, ask if they know anyone else who may be in a position to help you/take you on.

Barista Training

The City of Kalamunda is holding a free Barista class on Monday 27 March for students who are 16+.

Places are limited so register your interest by Friday 17 March. You will need to explain why you would like to participate in the workshop and why it would benefit you.
