ACC Senior Basketball

Round 1

The Senior First Basketball squad captained by Alex C travelled to Warwick to represent Mazenod in the ACC Tournament for 2023. Coached by Mr Websdale and Mr Walczak we had high ambitions for the day.

Game one saw us play St Stephen’s Carramar. Mazenod started brightly and started the game with a unanswered scoring streak of 10 points. The team played with great composure and poise and allowed the whole squad to get decent playing time. Riley P and Tyson G were the strongest players.

The second game saw us play St Joseph’s Northam, coached by Mazenod Old Boy, Cam Greenley. Mazenod came out all guns firing with Ben S helping himself to basket after basket. Seth C also put in a strong performance.

Coming off a bye, we entered round four of the tournament, where we faced local rivals and title contenders Mundaring Christian. The game ebbed and flowed but Mazenod managed to seal a 2 point win, 40-38. Riley P and Alex C were the joint top scorers with 10 points a piece with Jaidyn R adding 9.

The next game saw us face a very talented and skillful Clontarf team, Mazenod used their height to their advantage and scored a lot of their points in the paint. Jaidyn top scored with 9.

Game 5 saw Mazenod competing against the International School WA. Mazenod used both it’s size, advantage and depth in the penultimate game of the competition to beat the International School.

The final game was against a talented Quinns Baptist College team who had produced big wins early in the tournament against several opponents. Going into half time Mazenod held a slender lead with Quinns looking like they couldn’t miss. In the second half Mazenod showed their true class and despite the weary legs, blew away the opposition to record a win by 29 points at the final whistle, 56-27.

Both Mr Walczak and I were truly honoured to coach the team, the playing group played with passion and pride in tough conditions.

Well done all!

ACC Junior Basketball Championship

February’s ACC Junior Basketball Carnival saw Mazenod’s best Year 8 & 9 ballers attend Warwick Stadium for a 6 game carnival. In the face of tough competition from schools like Mundaring Christian and St Joseph’s School, the team finished with 4 wins and 2 losses, narrowly missing out on moving through to the next stage.

Big-man moves from Alex D, 3-point marksmanship from Alfie P, and a bit of everything from Marcus M saw the boys finish strong with 3 straight wins. Fantastic sportsmanship on and off the court from all players. A big thank you to the large group of parents who came down to support the boys and to Mr Websdale for co-coaching, scoring, and bus-driving!

Herb Edwards Tennis

On Tuesday 9 March, the College Junior Tennis team competed in the Herb Edwards Cup at the Mt Lawley Tennis Club. Mazenod took a team of 9 students and were placed into a group with other Colleges. The standard of tennis was very high, and the students competed very well.

I would like to congratulate the students on their achievements on the day and commend them on their sportsmanship and excellent representation of the College. Also, a big thanks to the parents who came down to support the students.

Mazenod Tennis Championships

The Mazenod Tennis Championships were held at the school over a few weeks recently. There were 22 entrants from all years with the students from Years 7-9 playing for the title of Junior Champion and the Years 10-12 playing for the Senior Champion title.

The conditions were perfect for tennis with the standard of players it was set up to be fantastic tournament. The crowd was entertained by the boys showing off their skills.

The final four for the Junior competition were Ryan A (9) taking on Ryder L (8) and Liam C (8) playing Gabriel C (9). Ryan A went on to win the final against Gabriel C making him back-to-back Junior Tennis Champion.

In the Senior competition Lachlan U, Sebastian M, Oscar U and Cristian C were the finalists. There could only be one victor and Lachlan U (Y11) won the Senior Tennis Champion, defeating Sebastian M (12) in a rematch of last year’s final.

Congratulations to Lachlan and Ryan and to all the other competitors for taking part in such an enjoyable event.

Graeme Wood Shield

Round 4

Wednesday 8 March 2023

Mazenod College v La Salle College

La Salle won the toss and elected to bowl. Mazenod was hoping to bowl first, so this made Mazza unsure what score would be competitive on La Salle’s nicely mowed but spongy oval, with small boundaries. As Mazza’s first innings went on, it appeared hard to get value for money, with shots along the ground slowing up, so a total of around 150 runs looked to be about par. Mazenod then ended up on 5 wickets for 143 runs off their 20 overs.

This was set up by Jaxon ‘The Ace’ D hitting his second 50 in his career and in this tournament to date. He hit a brilliant 61 runs off 46 balls with 8 boundaries, including 6 big sixes! He was well supported by consistent contributor Harry ‘The Glue’ G, who again kept the middle order intact with a handy 21 runs off 17 balls, along with Braden F who hit 21 runs not out off 15 balls and a handy cameo from Ben S with 16 runs not out off 8 balls.

In the second innings Mazenod took to the field full of confidence after their batting display and could see the victory was close, but still not done. They had a nice total of 143 runs to defend and the opening bowlers charged in knowing early wickets would be the key. They bowled to the plan and had La Salle 5 wickets for 4 runs after 3 overs, and the game was now  looking nearly done.

Brilliant bowling performances once again from Jevan B with an unbelievable spell of 3 wickets for 3 runs off his 4 overs, which included 1 maiden over and 1 wide bowl, making him virtually unhittable. Lachlan ‘Turbo’ S was back to his best with a well deserved 2 wickets for 9 runs off his 4 overs, and Ben S coming in with another late cameo with the ball this time to produce 2 wickets for 1 run off his 1 over.

In the field, it was again Harry ‘The Glue’ G who stuck 4 great catches and Jaxon D who got a crucial run out, which was their only batter who looked dangerous and passed double figures in the run department. All up it was a complete performance by the boys, having the home team all out for 78 runs.

This is a season defining win and Mazenod is now through to a well-deserved quarter finals knockout stage. The next game will be Wednesday 15 March, but their opponents and venue are yet to be determined, as other results are still to be finalised. Keep an eye on Facebook for the game details.
