Foundation and Year 1/2

Palm Sunday

Today, Foundation and Year 1/2 presented the story of Palm Sunday to the whole school. Palm Sunday is always the final Sunday of Lent, which is forty days of fasting in the Christian tradition. Since Palm Sunday always falls on the last Sunday before Easter, this year, it falls on April 2nd, 2023 (this Sunday).

Well done to all our amazing actors and fantastic narrators! It was wonderful to see everyone participating and having fun!

Inquiry / Art

This week we combined the Inquiry and Art Curriculums to demonstrate our strengths and to actively work in a team. Using a variety of natural materials found in the school yard, students had to work cooperatively, negotiate and compromise to produce a piece of art.

Nirav & Massie - Our team drew a tree heart and used materials from nature such as sand, flowers, narrow and large sized leaves. We used teamwork by helping each other, listening and getting ideas from each other.

Allie - For inquiry we used sand, leaves and flower materials to make a group art piece. My group made a heart tree. We shared the jobs amongst our group members and worked cooperatively together.

Gail, Veer, Isabella

Our aim was to create a beach, we all had our own section. My creation was to make a shelter, Isabella made a rock pool and Gail made a rock pool too. We had a lot of fun working together, it was hard at the start because we all had our own ideas, but then we merged them together to make one piece. We learnt how to work together and it was fun.

Natalie, Brenton, Lauren, Jasmine

Our aim was to try and create a bee with leaves and wheat like fronds. We also used blue tissue paper for the sky. It was amazing working together as a team, we all agreed on what we wanted to do, and cooperated well together.

Stephanie, Roman, Maxie, Azariah

Our team made a peacock with leaves and squished flowers within the outline. At first it didn’t seem how we imagined it but then it all came together with the outline of the peacock. We were really proud of ourselves because we creatively made something new and practised working together as a team, coming up with different ideas, and compromising to make it all work out. We worked as a team to pack up even though that wasn’t fun, it was still worth it.

Callix, Tiffany, Sai, Kaitlyn

We made a boat sailing on the sea, with clouds and it was raining. The materials we used were tanbark, sand, leaves, sticks and colour pencils. At times, we compromised in the materials we needed and worked reasonably well together. At first we didn’t have confidence that we could get this done but we persevered, tried our best and succeeded. Cleaning up was the worst part of our activity.

Wellbeing

Part of our Wellbeing program is informed by some Professional Development completed last year, which looked at a range of strategies to discuss issues that may arise in a classroom. The 'Inner Circle, Outer Circle' strategy (see photo below) has been used successfully since our PD in 2022. Students on the inside share a range of solutions to a problem, with those students on the outside focusing on what has been said. If the outer circle, students who have a new idea or want to build on something that they have heard, simply tap the shoulder of a peer from the inner circle and swap places.

Enock "I thing the Inner Outer Circle strategy is effective because it forces students on the outside to listen to other people's ideas'

Rahim 'The good thing about this strategy is you can build on other people's ideas and suggestions to create a positive solution for everyone!'

Harmony Day

Harmony Day finished off with a bang, with Rose-Lee, our intrepid Learning Support Officer, making pasta from scratch (and sauce) with the students. And how did it taste?
