The Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad

On Wednesday March 1st, eight students from Highvale's Linguistics Club competed in the Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad, a not-for-profit event organised by linguists from The University of Melbourne and Australian National University. This Olympiad, which took place over four hours in an online format, challenged students to develop their own strategies to solve problems about fascinating real languages. Students competed in teams of four against peers from all across Australia in a series of activities that required complex linguistic and problem-solving skills.

A huge congratulations to Abi N, Hazel B, Michael J, Navya S, Natanya W (Year 12), Fiona R (Year 10), Freya H (Year 9) and Amy R (Year 8) for their enthusiasm and efforts, including organising and attending multiple training sessions before the big event. I am equally pleased to report that on Tuesday 14th March, the teams were awarded one Victorian bronze certificate and one Victorian silver certificate for their work, indicating their achievements in comparison to those who competed within their state!

All students should be commended for their amazing achievements and are encouraged to continue to pursue their passion for linguistics.
