GRIP Leadership Conference 2023

“It’s natural to think of self-first, but leaders need to shift to thinking of others first”

Even with an imperfect, wet start to the day, The GRIP Student Leadership Conference explored strategies for us to become better leaders. We learnt about the people we can reach as leaders, and how to improve our school community for everybody. We split into groups for electives to further understand strategies to improve engagement in school activities, and how to make people feel valuable in our communities. The second elective covered: how to get people involved with our new ideas.

Overall, we learnt about the importance of connecting to the people we lead, of prioritising friendship over status and most importantly, the impact we can have as student leaders.

Some personal reflection:

Catherine, Scully, Mickey, Caleb, Eva, Mirna and Liza

Caleb and Mickey: We also learnt a few ways to be better role models.

Mirna: I personally learnt a lot today, and I’m so happy to be included in this group. My favourite quote of today was “giving is more valuable than taking”.

Eva and Liza: Through the programmes partnership with Deakin University, we both found an interest in their Deakin Accelerate Program, a system that allows year 12 students the opportunity to undertake the first two units of a university level units that contribute to our ATAR.

Catherine and Scully: It is important to engage people in activities by creating suspense and involving people’s values.
