BSC Athletics Carnival

Friday 24th March marked the school Athletics Carnival, at which members of our four Houses jumped, ran, and threw for their chance to win the annual House Athletics Shield. It was a gloomy and cold start to the day at Llanberris Athletics Track but as students dismounted their respective buses an electric energy filled the track and halted the rain. The day started with the 800m races, in which Kambara runner, Tom Lyons, broke the record he set the previous year, with Harley Hamilton, Eric Wilkinson, and Billy Welsh not far behind. The track events entertained, with close races seeing many records broken on the day. Year 12 student, Zac Dally from Taltarni, was only just able to best Logan Sandlant from Kambara, to take First Place in the 100m Sprint. Tanaranga's own Ella Kerr, was able to break a stunning 4 records on the day.

Records Broken:

Female 15yr 100m - Ella Kerr 13.53

  • Old Record - 13.65 S. Leslie 1986

Female 15yr Triple Jump - Ella Kerr 10.31

  • Old Record - 9.49 M. Collins 1984

Female 15yr 200m - Ella Kerr 28.44

  • Old Record - 28.50 L. Graham 1982

Female  15yr Long Jump -  Ella Kerr 4.91

  • Old Record - 4.24 S. Pope 2002

M 16yr 800m - Tom Lyons 2:15.91

  • Old Record -  2:16.94 Tom Lyons 2022

With such a strong performance from Ella, Tanaranga were in contention for the bragging rights come the end of the day. Despite making her presence felt across all events, Ella didn't deter others from taking up the challenge and earning House points. Notable mentions include Tristian Drinkwater, who competed in many events, walking away with the coveted blue ribbon for the 15y/o Male Triple Jump. Meanwhile, Zac Bickerton was able to keep Wandarra's hopes alive, with his first-rate performance in both Shotput and Discus. Rookie Year 7 student, Liam Myles, snatched a few wins for the day and went on to lead his Kambara Relay team to a win, after an amazing sprint in the last 100m.  A notable tussle was the contest for 16-y/o Female Age Group Champion, with Emily Johnston from Taltarni and Jasmine Poyser from Kambara wrestling for the lead relentlessly, throughout the day. While Emily took the honours as Age Group Champion, it was Jas and the mighty Kambara who were able clinch the victory and claim the House Athletics Shield.  Well done to all Houses and Competitors!

The final results were:

Kambara (Green) – 783 points

Tanaranga (Yellow) – 693 points

Taltarni (Red) – 612 points

Wandarra (Blue) – 524 points
