Stage 6 Textiles visit TEXStyle 2023

On Monday 6 March, Stage 6 Textiles students travelled to Gallery 76 in Concord Sydney, to view the exemplary HSC Textile Projects from 2022.

As well as a a guided tour of the amazing HSC works from 2022, students were able to participate in a hands on practical textile project and engage with experienced Senior Textiles and Design teachers and experts from the Embroiders Guild, regarding the HSC Major Project and Folio requirements. Mrs Rogers was very pleased with the way the students conducted themselves and the enthusiasm they have shown for their studies. The students were most appreciative of Mr Rogers using his flexi day off to drive us there on the school bus.

We look forward to seeing what our senior textiles students will produce for their Major Textiles Project later this year.

Year 3 Flora Explorers

Year 3 have been learning all about living things in Science this Term.

We learnt that all living things reproduce, including plants! We learnt all about pollinators like bees and butterflies and dissected some real flowers to take a closer look at the parts of a flower that help it reproduce. Using magnifying glasses, we were able to find the pollen and ovule and see up close all the other interesting features. Some of us were able to collect some of the pollen on our fingertips.

After this, we drew a scientific diagram of the cross-section of a flower. We marveled at how clever God is to have made all these things so complex and perfect.

Education Perfect Languages Championships (EPLC)

The Year 8 Annual Languages Championships came up earlier this year than normal, running from 7-14 March. Despite having been learning the language for 6 weeks, the students stepped up and did a stellar job. Some statistics to give you the picture:

2nd in French for NSW in the 1-50 students category (36 schools)
3rd in French for Australia in 1-50 students category (116 schools)
10th overall in 1-50 students category (803 schools)

Our top scoring students for this year were

Layla R, who answered 2,591 questions and had a score of 731
Michael T, who answered 2,263 and achieved a score of 718!

C'est fantastique!

'The Education Perfect Competition is a language competition where students need to answer questions about various words in French. The questions range from translating words from French to English, listening to the words and writing them in French or English, or looking at the English words and writing them in French. Students can choose from a wide range of words, from sports to numbers. They have everything; the most difficult part is deciding what to learn. I chose numbers 1-100, body parts, items at a cafe, and Le Tour de France. In 7 days, I answered 2,591 questions and got a score of 731. Overall, it was a thrilling competition with an amazing reward.' Layla R

Uncle Tom visits Stage 1

On Tuesday 7 March, Stage 1 students enjoyed a visit from Uncle Tom, one of our local Aboriginal Elders. As part of our Unit 'Australia and Aboriginal Studies', Uncle Tom was invited to share with us and answer our questions about his life growing up on the land. He shared photos of his family and spoke about respect for the land, what it provides for us and respect for one another. We had such an interesting time hearing his stories and we thank Mrs Stewart for facilitating Uncle Tom's visit.

Pi Day 2023

On Tuesday 14 March, Primary students celebrated Pi Day. Classes engaged in a wonderful variety of pi activities to learn about this strange and amazing number. Eighty students had a go at reciting the digits of pi from memory. Our school champion this year was William S who recited 120 digits. Second, third and fourth places went to Amelia W who recited 112, Cameron S 108 and Rylan T 102. Congratulations to all those who participated and earned points for their houses.

Advanced English Excursion

On Tuesday 14 March, the Senior Advanced English class caught the train up to Redfern and walked to the Sydney Seymour Centre to watch a lecture about the Shakespearean play ‘The Tempest.’

The actors walked us through significant scenes in the play, in a humorous and engaging way. The lecturer, Claudia Ware, helped us understand deeper meanings in the text.

Although it went for a long time, it was a very insightful experience and it will help us all as we go into the HSC. Afterwards, we went to a DELICIOUS Thai restaurant. We enjoyed eating food together and pulling pranks on each other. Thank you to Mrs Thompson and Mrs Douglas for allowing us to have this opportunity.

Food Technology at NCS this Term

The NCS kitchen has been productive and creative this Term. Year 7 students have been studying 'Delicious Dairy'. The practical component of this topic has required them to prepare a variety of delicious dishes, showcasing dairy products.

Recipes have included Potato Munchskins, Mini Quiche, Choc chip muffins, Scones with Jam & Cream, Butterscotch Curls, Tex Mex Chili dip and Hamburgers. Students have taken care in creatively plating up their food and have enjoyed eating the fruits of their labour together.

Their final assessment Task is a 'Wrap Challenge', if you are a Year 7 parent you may already have heard about this! The task requires them to use a flatbread with fillings of their own choosing, to create a unique, nutritious and tasty snack for an adolescent.

Stage 5 students have started the year looking at 'Food Selection and Health'. They have considered the reasons why individuals choose the foods they eat, how the body digests food and have analysed the nutritional benefits that food offers us. All the students have enthusiastically embraced the challenge to produce dishes with a high nutritional value, while also being aesthetically pleasing, re 'Insta worthy' and delicious to eat.

Shakaya swims at SOPAC

On Thursday 9 March, I went to Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre for the CSSA Primary State Swimming Carnival. It was my first time swimming at SOPAC, so it was a fantastic experience. For my race, the 100m Freestyle for 12 year girls, there were two heats. I came first in my heat. Overall I came 9th out of 18 people. I was happy with how I swam. Big shout-out of THANKS to my parents for taking me up to Sydney and back again and for all their encouragement.

CSSA Zone Swimming Age Champions

Special congratulations to Claire H (Year 10) & Lili M (Year 12) who were crowned Age Champions at the recent CSSA Zone Swimming Carnival. Claire took home the 16 Year Girls Champion and Lili the 18 Year Girls Champion. Amazing effort girls!

Year 7 student of the week

Jude M is a worthy recipient of Year 7 Student of the Week. He is an engaged learner and a great role model for his peers.
